My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

11/15/09 - I'VE BEEN ADOPTED!

Adoption Fee: $300

Fostered in Louisiana

Age: 4 years

Weight: 12 lbs.

ADOPTION APPLICATION REQUIRED.
Visit www.YorkieHavenRescue.com to apply.

10/1/09 - It has now been 7½ weeks since Chase's surgery and the dogtor says that he is doing well and his pelvis is healing nicely. He goes back in on 10/6. At that time, he will be sedated, and have the pin that has been holding his shattered femur together pulled out and a new splint put on. Two weeks after this (on 10/20), the splint will be taken off completely, another x-ray taken, and Chase’s leg will then be wrapped in a soft bandage and he will be able to bear weight on his leg for the first time in almost 3 months.

The D-day we are looking at is 11/3 when Chase’s leg will be totally “cast, pin and bandage” free and he’ll be “new” again. After this date, it will probably take a little while until he is totally 100% on all fours again since it has been so long since he’s used that leg and he’ll need to build his muscles back up (and grow the hair back out), but he is looking forward to his first jog in his new back yard.

Chase’s vetting has not been cheap, but YHR does not take in pups depending on what vet care they will and will not need. We were lucky to get him in our program and are privileged to have been able to help this special man. If Chase’s bumpy past and road to recovery has touched your heart, please consider donating to help offset his vet bills.

8/11/09 - Chase hasn’t had it so well up til now. His first owners came to Louisiana one weekend to visit family and brought him along for the trip. Somehow he got away from them and was lost running the streets. A nice couple picked him up, called the number on his tag, but his previous owners could not come back to get him and gave him to his rescuers. So now he had a new family. They took care of him, but without a fenced in back yard and close supervision, Chase wandered a little too far and got hit by a car. Some nice neighbor found him and called animal control and he was picked up. When he was finally reunited with his owners, they immediately brought him to the vet to hear the news that his pelvis was broken and his femur shattered. They realized that the surgery that Chase would need would be very costly, not to mention the time he would need to heal and various trips to the vet for check-ups, so they opted to call upon rescue for help and turned their boy over to Yorkie Haven Rescue for his own good.

Chase had surgery on his leg on 8/11/09 and the vet went ahead and neutered him at the same time. They said that the pelvis was a clean break so they would leave it to reattach and heal on its own (which means strict crate rest in order for it to heal itself, with him only being able to do his business outside on a leash). The femur bone was broken and shattered and they placed a pin down the entire leg to hold it together.

He will be released from the hospital on 8/14/09 and his new foster mom will pick him up and bring him home so he can begin his road to recovery. He might not be able to run around and play with his new foster siblings (3 other yorkies), or enjoy his new beautiful back yard with a pond (for taking a quick dip) for several weeks, but he will get attention and tender loving care while in the healing process.

After weeks have passed and we are sure that Chase’s leg is healing properly and, more, importantly, his pelvis is mending, we will then set him up for a dental. After the leg is as good as new, the teeth are cleaned and his spirits are back to Chase’s standards, he will be ready to join his new family.

Chase loves people, loves other dogs, gets along well with children (if they aren’t too rough) and pretty much adores life. I look up to this guy for having such a great outlook after all he has been through. No one animal should have to endure this much in 4 short years, but from this day forward it will be nothing but brighter days for Chase. His new foster mom has promised him that his next family will be ready and willing to love and adore him as much as he will them, give him a nice soft bed to sleep in (preferably with his humans), a secure fenced in backyard, plenty of toys at his disposal, a fur-sibling or two to occupy his time when his mom and dad step out, and pretty much the life of a King Yorkshire.

It will be at least 8 weeks before Chase will be ready to go to his new home, but since he will be laid up with nothing to do, if you are interested in being the best “Chase” owner that you can be, go on and send in your application so he can start the screening process.
