My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

What is your name?
Kona. My foster mom drinks a A LOT of coffee 😊

How old are you?
5 months, give or take (a/o 2/1/20)

How much do you weigh?
40lbs

What do you look like?
I have a shiny soft black coat, and some white on my chest and paws. I have floppy ears and some “salt and pepper” under my bottom lip.

What do you like to eat?
I eat my puppy kibble like a champ and I love training treats. Oh, and I tried this thing called bacon and it was amazing.

What kind of personality do you have?
Smart, very curious and “full of it”, at least that’s what my mom says a lot. I have a lot of energy, I mean I AM a puppy, but I am learning my manners.

Describe your perfect day:
Wake up and stretch after a night in my crate, potty, then we get breakfast. After that I usually go snuggle with my foster dad for a bit in their human bed. Its cozy and warm. Then I am ready for play with my foster brother, we like to tug and chase each other. Then, its naptime…usually in my crate because my parents work. Most days my foster sister comes home for a few hours between classes and work so I get to play with her, then when everyone else gets home we do it all again until bedtime.

What is your favorite toy?
My rope toy, my foster brother drags me around, or I chew on it. I also LOVE anything my foster brother is playing with. I am learning how to share. My dad has a really big stick he walks with, he’s let me chew on it a few times…I’d like to chew on it more, maybe drag it around, but not sure if I can talk him into it.

Do you know any tricks?
I can sit for my supper. I “point” to things in the back yard and try to flush birds out of the bushes. I also chase my tail. I also ring a bell at the backdoor when I nee to go potty outside.

What scares you?
Loud or unfamiliar noises, but I am getting braver. I like having my mom nearby so I can hide behind her legs if I need too.

Have you been around children? Do you like them?
Not really, but I am down to play with anybody who comes over.

Do you like cats?
I haven’t met any

How do you feel about other dogs?
I’ve only met my foster brother, he wasn’t crazy about me at first but I LOVE him, and usually I can get him to play with me. If he’s really grouchy I just give him gentle kisses on his lips.

If you could be anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Outside exploring. Or inside exploring.

How is your health?
Great!

Who do you live with your foster home and who is your closest companion?
I live with my human foster mom, dad and sister, and my foster dog brother Dash. He was rescued by my family too.

Where do you hang out when you are home alone?
In my crate.

Where do you sleep?
In a crate, and as long as I get to play before bedtime, I sleep quietly all night. I have a bed in the living room next to my brother’s and we take naps there, and sometimes we steal each others’ beds. But we’re cool.

Do you like walking on a leash?
I haven’t gotten to go out for walks yet because I don't have all my vaccinations, I have had a leash on a few times, seems like something else fun to chew on?

Do you have any "not-so-great" habits that we should know about? For instance, do you bark or dig in the yard?
I do bark, when my brother and I are playing, or when I want him to play with me. I chirp like a bird when I want attention OR when I’m tired of playing or napping in my x-pen. I also started jumping up at the counter when my mom is making my food and she is teaching me not to do that. I don’t dig, but I will paw at things I am curious about. I like to chew because I am a puppy and I still have some baby teeth.

Are you house trained? (Meaning do you go potty outside)
I do go potty outside and am learning to use a bell to tell my family when I need to go pee or poop. If my family is good about regular potty breaks outside I won’t have an accident.

Do you like water?
Love it! I love to drink water and play in it. I am fascinated by the walk-in shower. I have had a few baths in there, it’s fun!

What do you love about your foster family?
They play a lot with me, and I get to have lots of toys, and treats when I do something good like let them know I need to go outside. They give me lots of praise and are always down for some snuggles or naps. I love our big backyard too!

What was your life like before being brought into NorCal Bully Breed Rescue?
My brother Chubbs and I were at a shelter and it was loud and kind of scary. Then my foster mom and dad showed up and took us in their car for a drive. My mom decided I would stay with them because she thought I was pretty relaxed and chill but I was just waiting to show them my energetic personality 😊

NorCal Bully Breed Rescue is a foster based rescue with foster homes spread all throughout the Sacramento area. We usually require our adopters to be within a 50 to 100 mile radius of us, depending on the dog, and depending on the home. This is because we need to do a yard check to guarantee that the potential adopter's yard is secure, and also have them be close enough should any behavioral issues arise, and the assistance of our trainer is needed. We are, however, willing to adopt out of our area, including the Bay Area, Tahoe, and even further. We've even adopted out of state on very special occasions. We try our best to match our dogs to the perfect homes, and match them based on their personalities, not their looks. Adoptions are not done on a first come, first serve basis, rather in the order of what homes are the right match for that particular dog. Our adoption fees are based on the dog and range from $200-$350. In the case of senior dogs (6+ years), fees will be waived to the right home. This includes spay/neuter, vaccines, microchip, and deworming (if necessary).

Kona's adoption donation is $350.
