Leo is a sweet boy. He needs some time to warm up to people, but once he’s built a connection, he will reveal his sweet and goofy side. It takes longer for him to adjust to men in the home; at no fault of his own due to past experiences.

He would do best with an experienced dog owner - he’ll need a gentle, but firm leader, due to both his breed as well as his past. Leo doesn’t realize his size sometimes, but listens well to positive corrections. He LOVES food and will respond well to training with treats. He already knows how to sit, lay down, stay, come, go to bed, play dead, and knows some agility.

Leo is a gentleman on car rides, enjoys walks once he is comfortable, and is great at giving snuggles. Leo’s favorite thing to do is play in his kiddie pool, he enjoys sticking his whole mouth in to try and get the most water he possibly can.

Leo will require a few meet and greets with any potential adopters since it takes time for him to feel comfortable around new people. Leo likes most other dogs; he would prefer a dog friend, but a meet and greet will be needed to make sure Leo is the perfect fit!

The Animal Rescue Project (www.animalrescueproject.org) is committed to the best possible veterinary care for the pets it rescues and it is looking for adopters who will be similarly committed.

All dogs and puppies are given a general check-up when they enter our program. They receive medication to remove any intestinal parasites (worms), fleas, and ticks they may have. Dogs greater than six months of age are checked for heartworm. If heartworm positive, the Animal Rescue Project treats the disease. Dogs and pups receive all age-appropriate vaccinations for distemper, and dogs greater than four months of age are also vaccinated for rabies, in compliance with State of Michigan laws.

Most dogs and older puppies are spayed or neutered before adoption. In the case of puppies not old enough to be safely sterilized, a $50 deposit is required at the time of adoption and is refunded to the adopter with proof of sterilization.

The Animal Rescue Project requires every adopter to establish an active relationship with a veterinarian no later than 10 days after adoption. Adopters will receive a plan for routine veterinary care at the time of adoption and are expected to work with their vet to complete the plan.
