My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hello, Friends!

I’m Barry! As in...Barry Christmas. If right now, you’re thinking, “Barry is an awful name for a dog” I’d agree. It’s horrible. The nice woman who picked me up from animal control on Xmas Eve, and let me poop in her car, changed my name to Abel. Because Barry is awful! Well, that didn’t work out. My foster family really loves terrible names and because it was Xmas Eve that I got sprung from the “joint” it went right back to Barry. So, I’m Barry Christmas. I’m one of Santa’s lesser known reindeer. I’m a backup for Prancer if he’s ever on the reindeer injury list. But I’m pretty sick of always being a backup and not being on the starting line, so I’m officially up for adoption!

I may look a little scrawny still, from my time in the shelter but I am actually super agile and athletic. I’ve been training with Santa’s reindeer, so I am in shape! I’m a male, pit/reindeer mix, weighing in at just under 50lbs and I’m super young, only about 8 months old.

My foster mom quickly realized my athletic abilities, and that baby gates are no match for me. I’ve got skills like a flying reindeer and I am over those baby gates before you can say “Rudolph”. I added a video for your viewing pleasure. A baby gate is perfectly acceptable if you’re on my side of it. If I’m on the opposite side...nope...not happening...I’m coming over. I am absolutely in LOVE with my humans. I want to be near them all the time. When I was very new to my foster home, I saw my foster mom taking the garbage out, when I was taking care of my business outside. That wasn’t going to work. I gave her quite the scare when I jumped over the almost 5ft fence outside. After my foster mom finished having her heart attack, she realized I was more than happy to just follow her right back in the house. I wasn’t trying to escape, I was just trying to be with my human. My love for you will not be contained!

I’m also super affectionate. I love snuggling and napping with my people and small foster brother (dog). My foster mom even lets me on the couch! But that means I’m a pretty good boy because she has some couch “standards”. She only lets dogs with “couch manners” on the couch (she does not allow wrestling or zoomies on the couch).

I am potty trained and I sleep in my crate (I like to call it a sleigh) when no one is home, and all night long, with no issues. However, if I am in my crate and I can see you, I WILL try to be with you (please reference the above comment about my love being contained). I live with 3 kids (13, 8 and 7) and quite a few other dogs (all different, breeds, sizes, ages and sexes). I do well with my pack but do occasionally butt heads with the stubborn old bulldog, so my perfect home would either have a chill dog or I’d be perfectly happy being the only dog. More love for me then!

I also live with multiple other small critters, including cats and bunnies. The cats tease us dogs so trying to get those cats is a bit of a game. We call them Reindeer games. But the bunnies don’t care about me at all so they’re boring. If you’ve got a boring cat, I should do just fine with it. It’s when they start playing those reindeer games that I get excited and want to chase them.

I’m vaccinated, neutered, microchipped and heartworm negative. I’m ready to find a perfect home so I don’t have to be backup for Santa’s reindeer anymore. I want to be the shining star like Rudolph. If you think you can make me the star in your home, please fill out an application at animalheartline.org and a volunteer will contact you. How many more days until it’s Christmas again??
