My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hello, my name is Jolie! I have quite the story! I am actually new to the US; I just arrived here on October 24th! I am originally from Ukraine.

I was born on the street there and then moved to an outdoor shelter for a short time. When I was a puppy, I was adopted by a family that wanted me as a guard dog. They thought I would be good at that because of my breed and size. After some time though, they got to know me and saw I was a quiet and gentle dog. I did not bark at everyone and was very friendly. I thought my owners would appreciate this but instead they gave me back to the shelter.

I am a very loyal dog, so this was very hard on me. I started to chew on my paws because I was so sad about being abandoned. I still have scars from that. By this time, I was already full-grown and over a year old, so in Ukraine, my chances of getting adopted by a family were almost zero.

In Ukraine, they do not have volunteer foster homes, but there are people who will bring dogs into their homes for payment. So, my shelter moved me to a home like this and paid a lady to take care of me. After I moved in with her, I felt like I had an owner again and I stopped chewing my paws. I have not done that for over 2 years now, except just a little bit after I traveled here from Ukraine. But traveling overseas is stressful for everyone, isn't it!?

I was really lucky that an American organization found out about me and agreed to bring me to America, otherwise I would not have any hope of finding a forever home.

My foster mom thinks it is a good idea until I am completely settled into my environment to have me wear a cone while she is gone so I do not start chewing my paws again. I do not mind wearing it, and this is working well. I will probably not have to wear it soon, but when I go to my forever home, it will be a good idea for me to just wear it for a few days when I am left alone, just until I get settled in.

So more about my personality! I am a very loving and cuddly dog. When my foster mom comes home from work I jump around and then go touch her with my nose, and try to get some hugs! In the morning I wait patiently for her to wake up, so I can give her some morning hugs.

Despite the saying, I am a quick learner. I have only been in America a short time, but learned the command "sit" in 2 days! We are working on "down" and "paw" now and I almost have them down!

My foster mom thinks I would be a good fit for active (or moderately active) people. I love to run and have gone for a 10-minute run every morning since I have been. My foster mom thinks that with everyday training I could do much longer runs. When I was in Ukraine, right before I left, I participated in a 5k dog run!

Even though I love to run, honestly, I am sleeping most of the day when I am at home! I always love attention though, if you want to come and pet me.

I am also good with cats! At my foster home, the neighbor's cat was walking outside and I just went up to sniff him, but he was not too interested in playing with me.

I am also good in the car and I walk well on a leash and do not pull on walks. However, after I travel in a car, sometimes I get excited about being at a new place, and can start pulling the leash, but I will calm down after a while.

I have been to 2 parties already in America with lots of people, dogs and kids and I did well! I am really good with kids, even small kids. Once a little boy came to play with me and was grabbing my ears and face and I did not do anything!

I also do not bark very much. I do sometimes if I hear other dogs walking outside, but I will stop immediately if you tell me to.

I like to play with a stick too but I do not know how to bring it back yet, but my foster mom is working on that with me! I likes soft toys, I am not really interested in balls. I also sleep on the floor, or on a dog bed. It seems I was previously trained to not jump on a bed or couch unless I am told to.

I am looking for my forever home with someone looking for a sweet and gentle dog, but one to take with on lots of activities. I am ok staying home while you are at work, but it would be better if you could come home after 6 hours and take me for long walks or runs and we could do fun things together on the weekends. I also would do good with someone who works from home or is retired but still active and looking for a loyal friend to do activities with.
