My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

What is your name?
My name is Okra. 🌸

How old are you?
My vet told me I’m most likely 7 years old but could be as old as 9.

How much do you weigh?
96 lbs.

What do you look like?
I’m an An American Bulldog with white with black and brindle patches.

What do you like to eat?
I like to eat EVERYTHING but I’m happy with dry dog food. 🍖

What kind of personality do you have?
I’m pretty mellow but love to see new people. I sleep a lot but can surprise people with my version of the zoomies from time to time. 😴

Describe your perfect day:
Perfect day would have a room full of treats, laying around with you, a few tiny walks, lots of pats and a bit of outside playing.

What is your favorite toy? I think I like balls best but maybe something I can shake around. Sometimes I use blankets as toys. 🎾

Do you know any tricks?
I can sit, lay, stay, and shake hands.

What scares you?
I can get scared when someone grabs my collar, I think I used to get in trouble so sometimes I get worried.

Have you been around children? Do you like them?
I haven’t been around children in my foster home but I would be great with older kids that know how to be gentle with dogs. In my old age, toddlers and very active little children that are still learning how to behave around dogs wouldn’t be fair to me.

Do you like cats?
I like cats and do great as long as there’s a VERY slow introduction (my foster dad made me wait a month but now we’re besties). 🐱

How do you feel about other dogs?
I’m a little fearful of other dogs. If my forever family has a dog, they’d have to follow a very slow introduction plan that the rescue would provide.

If you could be anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Inside with you. 😍

How is your health?
I have some noticeable skin issues that require me to get medicated baths regularly. The doctor thinks I’ve had them my whole life. I also have arthritis and bad knees but nothing that needs surgery. The best thing for me is to get up and move around often.

Also, I did have heartworm but survived the really rough treatment and am clear!!

Who do you live with your foster home and who is your closest companion?
I live with Great Grandma Charlotte and my foster dad and I am exceedingly gentle with Great Grandma Charlotte. I love my foster dad because he feeds me and takes care of me. He thinks I really, really like ladies.

Where do you hang out when you are home alone?
When I’m home alone, I stay in my crate.

Where do you sleep?
I like to sleep near my people but it’s good to have my crate open so I can go in there.

Do you like walking on a leash?
I do great with a leash.

Do you have any "not-so-great" habits that we should know about? For instance, do you bark or dig in the yard?
I bark if I’m by myself in the yard and I will bark at people I don’t know if they walk by.

Are you house trained? (Meaning do you go potty outside)
Yup! I go outside.

Do you like water?
I take good showers but I didn’t like the rain very much. 🌧

What do you love about your foster family?
I love LOVE love them. I love sleeping on my comfy bed and getting pet and getting showers and going for walks. 💕💕💕

What was your life like before being brought into NorCal Bully Breed Rescue?
I was found as a stray and was heartworm positive. A different rescue got me out of the shelter and introduced me to not just one, but two dogs WAY too fast and a fight ensued and my face got hurt. They gave up on me and sent me back even though it wasn’t my fault (people in Rescue should know that dogs need TIME to recover from the shelter before meeting other dogs).

NorCal Bully Breed Rescue found my foster dad and they got me out. I’ve been doing great ever since.

NorCal Bully Breed Rescue is a foster based rescue with foster homes spread all throughout the Sacramento area. We usually require our adopters to be within a 50 to 100 mile radius of us, depending on the dog, and depending on the home. This is because we need to do a yard check to guarantee that the potential adopter's yard is secure, and also have them be close enough should any behavioral issues arise, and the assistance of our trainer is needed. We are, however, willing to adopt out of our area, including the Bay Area, Tahoe, and even further. We've even adopted out of state on very special occasions. We try our best to match our dogs to the perfect homes, and match them based on their personalities, not their looks. Adoptions are not done on a first come, first serve basis, rather in the order of what homes are the right match for that particular dog. Our adoption fees are based on the dog and range from $200-$350. In the case of senior dogs (6+ years), fees will be waived to the right home. This includes spay/neuter, vaccines, microchip, and deworming (if necessary).

Okra’s adoption donation is $200.

Interested in meeting Okra or any of our available pooches? Complete and submit our adoption application on our website norcalbullybreedrescue.com and we will respond to you within 24 to 48 hours.
