Hello! My name is Smokey. I am about 4 years’ young and came from Eastern Washington after being found as a stray.
This is a little bit embarrassing, but I’ve been at the shelter for awhile now. I’m not really sure why because I am a gentleman, ALWAYS. I walk by the side of anybody doing me the honor; I sit when asked and give my paw.
I was adopted right away, naturally, I’m very handsome and people notice me! Unfortunately, the family who took me home had a very busy environment with lots of coming and going. I didn't know where I fit in since I was loose in this big, busy house. It was confusing and scary.
It wasn’t clear who the leader was so I took control. The humans became afraid of me and took me back to the shelter. Here I am. I’m now misunderstood and alone.
For the person that desires something 'out of the ordinary” – that’s me but with ownership comes responsibility for a task of continual control. I am not the dog for owner who desires a totally placid lap side companion but my good qualities are:
· I am highly intelligent and get easily bored – so need steady training.
· will be fiercely loyal to my owners and I thrive on the companionship of my owner/s
In a nutshell, we Akita’s are not “kid” dogs. Please don’t leave me with a child because I don’t have the patience for any poor behavior. I have very high standards for myself and those around me. I have to respect you to follow your rules. If you’re not a strong leader I will lead you. If you try to lead me by hurting me or yelling, you will lose my respect and we won’t have very much fun.
I am calm around other dogs and probably wouldn't mind living with a large, confident female. I need to be the only male and I'm not appropriate for cats or small dogs. The chaos of an off leash park is really unattractive to me so please, let's not. I do LOVE to swim so a stream or a lake with a long lead would be wonderful.
I will love learning to do things like obedience and agility. Since I am a strong willing dog, firm training should be on your” to do” list.
After experiencing some excursions and some time out of the kennel with a nice volunteer and seeing what a wonderful life I could have, I’m very serious about getting the word out. I’m Smokey and I’m available BUT not to just anybody. Come over and play in the yard with me. I’ll allow a game of fetch and you can scratch my shoulders.
Yours,
