My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Shenzi is a Domestic Short Hair (DSH), female, DOB: 2/2/19.
Calm, quiet, somewhat reserved with people she isn’t familiar with, it is accurate to say, Shenzi is a cat who is more easy to please and undemanding, than independent; and more discerning and looking to operate in her comfort zone, than shy. Content to be hanging-out and observing activities most of the time rather than being right-up in the action or the center of attention, make no mistake about it, Shenzi is an extremely affectionate cat who loves being held and cuddling with her people – she’s just not demanding about it, preferring instead to be plied and encouraged with soft-spoken words of invitation to which she’ll readily respond. Straight-up a no-nonsense young feline who is above-all-else an extremely sweet-natured, entirely earnest people-cat, this coyly impish young feline just needs to take things slowly initially; once she gets to her comfort zone though her confidence kicks in and it’s all fawning devotion for her people – gentle, but very expressive displays of love and affection – and often.
Intelligent and highly-sensitive, it is, as we said, very important for Shenzi to feel comfortable in her surroundings before letting her guard down, but once she does, her confidence as well as her friendly, engaging personality is enthusiastically revealed. While independent exploring is a favored pastime of Shenzi’s as well as being able to lounge in a sunny, favored spot (usually from a perch), we think you should know that she can be plied to lose any inhibitions with playful interaction and toys, particularly interactive play with feathered toys. Although a thoughtfully cautious cat in most instances, she is also a highly social cat who willl, no doubt, appreciate and enjoy the company of compatible cats and kittens as well as cat-friendly dogs in her home so long as she is allowed to settle into her comfort zone and establish reasonable boundaries with them. Again, harmonious interaction will rule the day if her people are patient and introductions are made at her pace.
Shenzi came to Monroe SPCA from animal control where she along with 2 brothers, Kamari and Azizi, were born to mother Sarabi who had recently come from a hoarding situation of more than 70 cats in a home. Unfortunately, the entire family was sick at intake, all having symptoms of URI’s among other things. Shortly after intake with us, the family tested positive for Panleukopenia – all receiving aggressive treatment for this deadly feline disease. Shenzi and her brothers were hospitalized for treatment; only Shenzi survived and not without life-altering consequences. After surviving Panleukopenia and well into her recovery, Shenzi began exhibiting symptoms of Cerebellar hypoplasia which she then also received treatment for, antibiotic and anti-inflammatory regimens; Shenzi has fully recovered but is left with a diagnosis and mild symptoms of Cerebellar hypoplasia.
Now a happy, healthy, pretty active young cat, Shenzi will experience symptoms of this manageable, but untreatable disease life-long. The good news: this is a non-progressive disease and Shenzi has only mild symptoms of some occasional incoordination. Special considerations in regards to heights and stairs is a necessity with her forever home placement; but Shenzi, like all felines with Cerbellar hypoplasia, can and will live a normal, long and healthy life with proactive, responsible, and caring owners who are willing to welcome an extremely affectionate young feline with special needs into their home.
Shenzi currently resides at Monroe SPCA’s Adoption Center and Retail Store. You can meet her by appointment with pre-approved adoption application. To start the adoption process, complete and submit Monroe SPCA’s adoption application linked above.
