Here's what the humans have to say about me:
My name is Avery. I have come a long way since I was first rescued. I’m still shy and cautious around strangers because of my history of being abused. It does take me a little longer than other dogs to come out of my shell, and because of that – when I do discover that you're someone I can trust, I will love you even more. When I came into the rescue/foster home, I was in terrible shape. My previous owners used me as a backyard puppy mill mom/breeder, and once I had my litter, they took my babies and dumped me in the middle of a country road in Tulare, in the height of summer’s heat with nowhere to go. I had also been previously abused so I am a little skittish around people whenever they raise their hands. Luckily, my foster mom got me out of a scary shelter as quick as she could and gave me the world’s longest spa day and showed me what it is to be in a home. Up until a few months ago, I had lost all my beautiful hair and was skin and bones. I had never been inside a home nor slept on a bed before, and was very afraid of people in general. But boy do I learn fast. The day I came home with her, I discovered yummy food, soft things to lie on, a roof over my head, and the AC is my new best friend. Sometimes I’ll lie on the couch if I am feeling adventurous, but most of the time, I just want to curl up in the middle of the living room where I can see all the comings and goings. I love walking outside with you, and I will walk right by your hip and go at whatever pace you set. Take me out for coffee or beer; I will be your best companion! I starting to come out of my shell and be more affectionate. I will give you all of my wet nose kisses and snuggles. I love other dogs, people, and I am especially good with children. They love me and I love them! I have not been around a cat yet so I am not sure how that would go, but my foster family thinks I’ll do just fine because of my super laid-back and sweet nature. I do great on car rides and I am house-trained and know my manners around the house. My foster parents think that I deserve nothing but the best in the world for the rest of my life because there’s a lot of catching up to do. All I want now is to find a furever home and a family that will give me unconditional love, let me be an indoor dog for the rest of my life, cuddle up to you on the couch when you watch TV, and give you lots of love in return.
Note: Great Pyrenees are considered a Giant Breed. The average weight can be 100lbs. or more. They bark, shed and have a wanderlust, so secure fences are a must-have. They are NOT off-leash dogs and a Pyr off-leash is called a "dis'a'Pyr". Some Pyrs do well with other dogs and some don't because by the virtue of the breed traits they were bred to keep out intruders and can consider some dogs as intruders. While they make wonderful pets and family dogs, they aren't for everyone so be sure to understand and learn about the breed traits of this breed or any breed you might be considering.
