PLEASE NOTE THAT THE VIDEO SHOWS GRETCHEN’S PLAYFUL SIDE BUT PLEASE DO NOT COME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT GRETCHEN IS A HIGH ENERGY DOG – SHE IS NOT.
Gretchen is a wonderful, fun, and sometimes hilarious upbeat pup that was rescued from the San Bernardino City Shelter. We DNA tested her, and she came out Level 1 Dachshund which means she is 75 per cent Dachshund. What that means is that one of her parents was a pure-bred Dachshund and her other parent was probably a Dachshund/Chihuahua mix, also known as a “Chiweenie.” Gretchen is about 18 months of age, weighs about 9 lbs., and has a perpetual puppy look to her face. She is mostly all black, with a white patch on her chest, and was rescued because so many black dogs are overlooked. Black dogs are harder to photograph, and videotape, but keep in mind she is MUCH cuter in person and her adorable personality is truly why she is such a doll!
Gretchen is a great balance of being playful and chilling out. In her playful mode, she is a hoot, running all around, acquiring various toys, flipping them into the air, stumbling (and tumbling) over a toy, so many cute antics, and essentially, entertaining herself. It is quite fun to watch! But after she gets this out of her system, she is astonishingly chill, finding a pet bed in the main room or office (wherever I am), with the other dogs, and plopping down. She is starting to learn to interactively play with other playful dogs. She loves people, and seems ready to love everything and everybody! She is also quite intelligent, learning the doggie door immediately once shown. She seems to respond with obedience to instruction.
Gretchen currently lives in a small pack of dogs at the rescue’s main house. She is often found sharing pet beds with the other dogs. She loves being in the same room as the humans. I do let her hang out on the human bed with me if I am resting, and she is very good, just lying still and being near, but at night time, she sleeps in a small wire crate (same as the other rescue dogs who also eat in crates and are crated when folks are gone from home for short periods).
Gretchen is doing well in her potty habits, and I facilitate regular times out. She is crate-trained and has gotten used to it. She needs a bit more practice on the leash. She has shown no digging tendencies but should still be watched for some puppy chewing still. Gretchen is basically a very happy dog with an ever-so-slight issue with separation, (like so many dogs) but it is quite manageable. She is safe in her crate when I leave and has gotten quite used to it, not giving me any problems.
Gretchen is basically a malleable dog that can fit into different environments. She is a great family dog, with no aggressive tendencies. Like most dogs, if people are gone from home for work, they typically appreciate another canine to be their friend. Gretchen would be well matched if someone is looking for another playful dog for their already existing playful pup. I do not have any information about Gretchen and cats. She seems like she would be good with appropriately aged children. I would tend to say that Gretchen would be happiest if not left alone for long, extended periods daily, and if she had a place to run around and express her joyful self, which often involves scaling the yard and occasionally being quite energetic.
NOTE: We only adopt dogs as primarily INDOOR dogs. Dogs can go outside to play, potty, to sun themselves at will, but should never be excluded to an outside area. You do not need to give a dog the run of the entire house, and an appropriate sized wire crate works very well during a transitional phase.
Gretchen is spayed, fully vaccinated, Front-lined, dewormed, and micro-chipped, and has also had a vet check which revealed overall good health. If you are interested in Gretchen, email Angel’s Heart Dog Rescue at: adopt@angelsheartdogrescue.com. In the email, please provide some information about your home, family, other pets, and your dog experience. Please also check your spam folder for an email reply from the rescue. If you wish, please also provide a phone number. Angel’s Heart Dog Rescue is a private, home-based rescue. We do have a process that involves some dialoging and an application (applications are not online); please be prepared to do this, and you can read about this process on my website: http://www.angelsheartdogrescue.com (go to the Adoption Tab).
We seek stable homes that can provide a life-long, loving environment for the dogs in our care. The phone number to the rescue is: 626-340-9316. There is no need to phone the rescue unless you do not receive a response from your email within 24 hours (evening to night emails may get a response the following morning).
