Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Ricky is looking for a new home. Isn’t he so handsome? And check out that head tilt! He loves running around the yard and chasing a ball. And he loves being with people. He’s all alone and lonely at the kennel. He can be dog selective.
This *evaluation is based on the Match-Up II Behavior Evaluation developed by Dr. Amy Marder.
History
This dog is a ?2 year old, approx. 55 lb I/M mixed breed dog, found as a stray approximately 1 week ago. He will be neutered before leaving the kennel. He initially ran to the front of the outdoor kennel enclosure and barked at me as I approached, but then took treats from my hand, gently.
Leash Manners
Pulls on leash.
Room Behavior
Eval was done outdoors. When he was let into the yard, he ignored me initially, but after several minutes, he approached me, took treats, and then moved away.
Call Over
Did not respond when he was called, or when I made “kissy” sounds.
Handling
Allowed handling of legs and feet, and stroking down back. Remained relaxed throughout.
Toys, Ball, Tug, Squeaky
Absolutely loves tennis balls! Retrieves nicely, but did not return to me. He would not exchange for treats, but voluntarily dropped the ball so I could throw it again. Was more interested in the ball than the treats. Ran after the squeaky toy, but then quickly dropped it. No interest in tug.
Run and Freeze
Did not follow.
Food Bowl
No interest.
Pig’s ear
No interest.
Dog/Dog Intro
Reacted by approaching kennel with N/M pit bull, and barking at him. The other dog backed away, but he continued barking. Once both dogs were on leash, out of the kennel, he continued to try to approach the other dog, with forward body posture, raised ears, and bimodal piloerection. His tail was curled up over his back, but that is his normal tail position. When introduced to a small female dog, he was very appropriate, and greeted the dog calmly. After a short greeting, he chose to move away. See videos.
Summary
This boy has done well meeting people, and while he was slightly ‘aloof’, he did well interacting with me. He seems to be dog-selective, which may relate to the size or gender of the other dog. He may do best as the only dog in his home, but with the right dog and appropriate introductions, he may be able to live comfortably with another dog.
* Please note, recent research has indicated that shelter evaluations are not necessarily predictive of behavior that will be seen in the home, and should not be used as the only criteria when placing a dog. This evaluation in no way guarantees future behavior.
