My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Cookie is a very sweet, affectionate ~6-year-old with definite lap cat potential! However, she does have some behavioral issues.

Cookie has been with us since fall of 2019, and while she always uses the litter box for #2, we noticed she often did #1 outside of the box. We tried numerous things to change her habits: new types of litter, litter attractants, multiple boxes, different styles of boxes, stress-reducing pheromone sprays and diffusers, even stress-reducing prescription food. She had bloodwork and a urinalysis performed to rule out medical causes.

After months of no improvement, our vet prescribed an anti-anxiety medication that is known to help this particular issue in cats. It is a transdermal ointment that goes onto the inside of her ear once a day, so it is pretty easy to administer. She has been on this medication for about 3 months now, and we are still uncertain as to whether it is making any clear difference.

We recently noticed that Cookie's preference for urinating seems to be on the reusable potty pads that we placed on the floor around the litter boxes. We rarely find any accidents in the room other than on top of these pee pads. So, we started putting the pads inside the litter boxes, to try to encourage her to pee inside of the box. This works about 80% of the time, though she still refuses to urinate in the box if there is no pee pad in it.

While this method seems to work to contain the urine in the box, it still has not solved her problem entirely, though it does make it much more manageable. We have speculated that she may have picked this habit up in a previous home where a dog was trained to use potty pads - though since we don't know where she came from, we don't know this for sure. However, it might explain why she prefers the pads.

We would be happy to send Cookie to a home that would have the patience to work with her on this issue and with someone who would understand that this might be a life-long habit of hers. If anyone were to express interest in meeting her after being made aware of her issue, we would be more than happy to do so!
