Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Hi everyone, my name is Checkers (but my foster family calls me Leo because I’m so brave).
Somebody dumped me way out in the country and I survived, fending for myself, for a month. Eventually, I started to trust a nice lady who began feeding me, and I went to live with her until she found ASF to rescue me. I was so skinny, they couldn’t believe I was still alive!
My foster family loves me and has learned what my perfect forever family will be. Foster mom says I am an adorable big bundle of sweet goof ball and will be a great addition to an active family. Here’s a little more information about me so you can see if I’m the one for you!
I’m about 11 months old and 60 lb. I think I’m an Australian Shepherd/Retriever/Handsome dog mix. I am housebroken and crate trained. I love to play with toys: throwing them around, pouncing on them, etc. I can be a bit of a clod, seeming to be all paws, but maybe I will find more grace as I grow up. My friends and foster family say I’m silly. I get along with my foster family’s three-year-old dog very well. She sometimes corrects me for my over enthusiastic, rough play style, but I don’t get upset or retaliate. I do enjoy playing chase with her and sharing the same toy. In my first foster home, I lived with kids, cats and horses, and loved them all. I am a pretty happy go lucky guy.
I am learning to walk nicely on a leash and go 4-5 miles a day without any issues. I mostly stay calm when we see other dogs or people during our walk.
Up until now, I haven’t been very food motivated, but now that I have a new kind of food, I am eating much better. I am patient with baths, love the towel dry rub down, and will sit to get my teeth brushed each night before heading to bed in my crate. I am comfortable staying in my crate when necessary with no barking or acting out, but really, I like to hang out in the same room with my people. I still have a puppy tendency to chase my tail and to also pick up things like socks and other items not mine, so keep an eye out!
I am very sweet, and I love to lean in for pets and head scratches. I do have moments of bullheadedness and will do best with a confident and consistent family that has consistent rules and boundaries.
I’m up to date on my shots, heartworm negative and on preventatives for heartworm, fleas and ticks. I’m neutered and microchipped. I’m being fostered in the Kansas City, MO area.
So that’s a bit about me. If you’re interested in learning more, tell us a little bit about you by filling out an application here. I’d love to meet you! https://www.australianshepherdsfurever.org/adoption-process…
Love and cuddles,
Checkers (Leo)
