ADOPTION DATE 08-30-19: Gus is a Flat-Coated Retrievers (FCR) and German Shepherd Mixes. He is an awesome mix of retriever, smart, playful and a perfect family dog with children along with the intelligence of the German Shepherd protective traits for his family.
Gus is about 35 lbs. and about 15 weeks old; DOB: 03-31-19. Gus and his sister Greta were found on a Louisiana roadside sitting beside their deceased mother and sibling. Apparently they had been dumped and the poor Mother got hit and killed by a car! Most of us don’t know that the true rescuers are not with a rescue group, they are kind hearted people that stop and pick up dogs and understand that they will need to find a rescue to help them; this is the rescue story for Gus and Gus, a kind special kind hearted woman stopped and picked them up.
Gus has shown his southern foster that he is the type of dog that is grateful to sit by your side and cuddle, eat a few treats and take a nap, knowing all the time that he is fully on top of everything happening. He constantly smiles which will keep his famly totally entertained. He is an awesome combination of clown and companion. He knows he is good looking and expects you to be aware of this fact at all times.
Gus is laid back kind of guy, greats you as soon as you approach him with a tail wag, lick and smile! He is playful and energetic when he sees people and gets along so well with other dogs, initiating play with them every chance he gets. He thoroughly enjoys the company of all people and dogs and thrives with any and all attention lavished upon him. One of the sweetest things about Gus is that he actually appears to always be smiling, he unquestionably unique.
Gus is good around his southern fosters grandchildren, he is very gentle with them and they are gentle, respectful and quiet with him. He is grateful to his foster family and will thrive in an active, but not chaotic household with older kids who want to take him everywhere they go! The wonderful thing about puppies is they are young enough to learn and grow within their family.
Gus’s southern foster tells us that out of the many dogs she has rescued—without a doubt--Gus is the sweetest dog, nicest dog she has ever met. However, just like children, puppies are babies also, therefore, children need to be supervised when they are with any puppy or dog. Children can be unpredictable and dogs sometimes don’t understand their quick impulsive behavior.
Gus is well socialized with dogs—sometimes as many as 20 dogs--as well as children. A fence would be a great place for them and children to play in, but not a requirement as long as the family is active and understands that they need to meet the exercise needs of a puppy.
As all puppies need a lot of love and patience, Gus gives the best kisses and would make a wonderful addition to a family willing to give his a lifetime commitment. In turn, he will worm his way into your heart and delight you with his puppy antics. Gus has no issues of any kind, he fits in everywhere and gets along with everyone, in his case just open your heart and he will walk right in.

Flat-Coated Retrievers (FCR) at first glance might resemble a black or brown Golden Retriever, but no such thing. He's a distinctive breed, his early popularity, which peaked before World War I, was eclipsed by that of the Golden and Labrador Retrievers, but his fans think that's for the best, preferring to keep the secret of his fun-loving yet hard-working nature to themselves.’
It's no surprise that the Flat Coat Retriever is one of the top ten most popular dogs in the U.S. They are highly intelligent, sociable, beautiful, and loyal. They can be slow to mature and retains the silly, playful personality of a puppy until three to four years of age. This breed has a sweet, gentle, people-pleasing personality.
Flat-Coated Retrievers are an eternal puppy, overflowing with happiness and energy. They adore people and will greet everyone they meet as if that person were their best friend. After a day of playing with the kids in the back year, the FCR will turn into a lapdog – don’t be surprised if you find him sleeping in bed under the covers. This breed is friendly and social and gets along well children and pets.
German Shepherd are friendly but have a calm confidence about them, they may seem kind of reserved. When in need, however, a German Shepherd is instantly ready to protect, play a game or perform a task—in some cases as a guard dog, police dog, herder or seeing eye dog. With a strong work ethic and an eager intelligence, GS breeds are good with other dogs and children especially if they have been exposure to them.
