Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Elliott is a very handsome, energetic and loving 10-month-old, 65-pound male Black Labrador Retriever-mix looking for a loving home.
Elliott was found as a starving stray in Gary, Indiana. It was clear he had never received any training before, but he had such a fun, enthusiastic personality that he was taken home by a rescuer. Elliott LOVES other dogs … and people, but, his lack of manners was pretty dismaying.
So, Elliott was sent to prison ... The Prison Tails program, at the Westville Correctional Facility in Indiana, helps train men and dogs to be better members of society. It’s really amazing. Dogs and inmates are partnered 24 hours a day for a month. Dogs learn basic obedience through daily repetition and positive reinforcement. The inmates learn values that many of us take for granted, and receive a sense of accomplishment with each dog that they train.
Volunteers from Mixed Up Mutts visit WCF weekly for training sessions. And there is a full-time staff member on-site dedicated to overseeing the program.
So, Elliott received his AKC Canine Good Citizen certification in jail. Nicknamed “Big Silly” by the inmates, Elliott still has a lot of clumsy puppy energy and enthusiasm so he’s looking for a special experienced dog-lover with the time and energy to reinforce all that he has learned … and encourage him to learn even more. Elliott will be best in a home with children over the age of 12.
Elliott is housebroken, crate-trained, knows the commands sit, down, stay, speak, come, and roll-over. He is so responsive and attentive to people, and he loves treats, with a little more work and daily exercise, he will be a dog of a lifetime. He is extremely healthy, neutered, up-to-date on vaccines, micro-chipped, heartworm-free and on preventative, and treated for fleas and worms.
To meet and possibly adopt Elliott, please contact his rescuer Melia at melia88@comcast.net or 708-224-1900. His adoption donation of $200 benefits rescued pets.
