Here's what the humans have to say about me:
After months and months of rehabilitation, both physical and mental, Kris is finally ready for his forever home. Kris Kringle came to us just before Christmas as a stray, severely emaciated. With lots of love, patience, and guidance, he has blossomed into a wonderful companion. The physical rehab was the easy part, the mental rehab proved to be a bit trickier. It was almost as if Kris' mental maturity stunted as he was being starved, nearly to death, for the first 9 months of his life. Once he was physically rehabbed, we discovered we had an 80 lb - 16 week old puppy on our hands! Everything seemed to be new to Kris, couple that with a serious distrust of what was coming next and you get a very loving yet confused and reactive working dog. He was enrolled with the amazing trainers at PosiDog dog training in Columbus OH. After evaluating him, it was decided that the "Rowdy and Reactive" class would be an ideal fit. He excelled in class and is ready for an advanced class! Positive reinforcement/rewards based training will be crucial in order for him to succeed in his new home and for him to continue to mature into the ideal distinguished Doberman we all know he can be. Kris proved to be highly biddable and very much enjoyed learning new requests as well as the structure that a weekly obedience class provided. He was able to learn, in a safe environment, what is expected of him around strangers and other dogs.
There is some baggage as a result of his rough beginning and most of that centers around food....and items he perceives as food. He cannot have soft stuffies or he will ingest them. Safest toys for Kris will be stuffed Kongs. He will need to be fed in a safe spot, away from other dogs. Kris also still has the urge to snatch human food that is within reach. We are confident that this will subside given the great strides he has made during his time with us. For example, when he came in he would literally climb on the counters during meal prep in order to get to food. Now, he politely waits, paws crossed, waiting for morsels to fall to the floor.
Kris is crate trained but is currently baby gated and does remarkably well. He is 100% house trained and is not destructive, however free roam of the entire house (aka kitchen) would prove too much for his food drive to handle. His puppy brain also finds bathroom trash cans irresistible. He is remarkably trusting of his family and will sleep flopped on his back.... paws up! He is incredibly Velcro, loves car rides and knows his basic requests. He is good with other dogs and currently shares his home with another male Doberman and will play through the fence with the neighboring Chihuahua. He has not been tested with cats but does not seem to have a strong prey drive. He does require a physical fence. The most important thing for his new family to understand is Kris is a large full grown adult male Doberman physically, but his mind is still like an adolescent when it comes to his level of trust with new people and situations. His adopter will need to be willing to take over the reins with his training and accept the awesome responsibility of setting Kris up to succeed in what he may perceive as scary situations. We will not place Kris in a home with small children.
