My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

: Are you smarter than a six month old? If so, this adorable, energetic, happy puppy may be just the guy for you. Ralphie is at that age when he is learning lots of new things and encountering new situations. He needs someone who will teach him appropriate behaviors and help him to overcome his natural wariness of strangers. He is extremely smart and highly treat motivated, so with consistency he will quickly learn what is expected of him.

Ralphie came to MWCR from a shelter where he was taken as a stray. He was diagnosed there with a skin mite infection which was contagious, so the shelter was anxious to transfer him to a foster home. He is receiving medication for this condition and has only one treatment remaining before he will be considered completely cured. Once his treatments are over he will be a normal, healthy, collie pup. At that time he will be neutered (some time in July) and will be officially available for adoption.

Like many dogs that have lived as strays, Ralphie is food and treat aggressive. This behavior may or may not lessen with time, but unless it does, he will need to be consistently fed away from other dogs (ideally in his crate). He also sleeps in his crate, and if he is a bit reluctant to enter it, a few pieces of kibble will work wonders. He is working on his housetraining and needs to be taken out regularly or crated.

Ralphie gets along well with the other dogs at his foster home and really enjoys the kitties. He particularly likes to chase them, but once the kitties stand their ground, the game is over. He is nervous around strangers and wary of loud, sudden noises. For this reason, his forever family should not include children under the age of twelve.

Like all puppies, Ralphie has lots of energy and loves to play. A fenced yard is a must, since he will need a place to run and burn off all of that puppy exuberance. He likes to go for walks and is working on his leash skills though he still prefers bouncing and pulling to walking sedately by the side of his foster mom. He likes to chew and will need guidance about what is and what is not appropriate. Ralphie does not like car rides, probably because he often gets car sick. This may lessen with time and age, but in the meantime, he should be crated in the car.

As is obvious from his pictures, Ralphie was born with more than his fair share of “cute” with lots of “playful” and “silly” thrown in for good measure. He loves to be petted and will just lean into you, as if he can’t get close enough. When he gets excited he will “march in place” with just his front feet, and it will melt your heart! But in spite of all this, a puppy like Ralphie is also a responsibility. He will need a committed, dog savvy, forever home (ideally one with another dog and without young children) that will help him to become a confident, well behaved, adult collie, because as Ralphie says, “You can’t get by on your good looks forever.”
