Here's what the humans have to say about me:
This is Taz and she is a small and energetic Springer Spaniel ready for her new home. She is active, vaccinated, microchipped, spayed, and heart worm negative. Did we mention that she was active? Taz only weighs around 30 pounds at the moment, but we would love to get a bit more weight on her. She is a ball of energy when outside though and runs all of her food off in the yard chasing birdies.
Taz has had some training and knows how to sit, is crate trained and knows how to use a doggy door. She is looking for a home where she can be part of the family. She loves people and she loves her toys!! Taz is good with kids, but probably would not be a good fit for kids under 12. She will blast through anything in her way in order to chase a thrown toy (or a bird that has landed in the yard) and we think she would probably jump up on young kids for food and would pull away from them if they wanted to walk her on leash. So we are looking for a home with kids over 12 years of age for her.
Taz lives with other dogs but is sometimes bossy with them. She likes to play with them when she is in the house but the yard is all about chasing birdies. Sometimes it's even more fun to chase birdies with a ball in your mouth!! When she has a toy, she does not like to share it with her doggy friends, and growls at them if they try and take it away from her. She lives with other dogs who are very dog savvy and she has never gotten into a fight or scuffle with other dogs, but she is not left unsupervised with them. We would love to find a home where she can be the only dog, or with an easy going male dog her size or larger as a companion.
Taz is much calmer in the house than she is outside. She used to be crazy in the house but has now learned that outside is for running around and inside is for parading your toys and for getting petted. She is still learning that she is not allowed on the couches, but she is pretty good about it most of the time. Supervision is the key!! When she can't be watched, she can go in her crate and she is happy as a lark. Most times in the house, she is given a toy and she will lay quietly by your side while playing with her toy.
Taz is super quiet in her crate and rarely barks. The only time she barks is if she is in her crate and the other dogs are doing something out of their crates that sounds like fun. She gets excited if she thinks they are going to go for a walk without her or if it is another dog's turn to play fetch! (There are multiple active dogs in the house she is living in, so they take turns fetching for optimum alone time). Taz will chase birdies all day long if left in the yard. We are looking for a home that is willing to crate her when they are gone and will monitor her outside activities so that she will not pace too much. We want her to be part of the family. This is a common activity with some of the more "birdy" spaniels and she definitely fits the mold!!
Like we said, she loves her toys almost as much as birdies. If she doesn't have a toy, she tends to find a sock instead and will parade it around for hours. If you like your socks, then they should go in a hamper and not on the floor or this girl will bring it somewhere else. She used to like to carry around the bath mats as well but has now learned through guidance that bath mats stay in the bathroom and toys are for carrying around! We are sure that she will learn the same thing about socks too once she is in a home for long enough and has proper guidance.
Taz is a loving dog with people but she is not a push over. She needs rules and guidance. She will thrive in a home that wants to bring her training to the next level, but will probably become progressively naughtier if she doesn't have guidance and an established set of boundaries. For example, if you let her pull you on leash she will start dragging you everywhere. If you allow her to jump up on you when you first get home she will jump on you and claw at you all the time for attention. This is not one of those dogs you just plop in the home and she will never need training, she wants structure.
Now back to her energy levels. Taz will go and go and go if you let her. But....she will also calm down with just a daily walk and/or some structured playtime and obedience in the yard. If she is left to her own devices she will run all day long outside. We have found in her foster home it is better to let her get a few laps in so that she can get it out of her systems and then we attract her with a toy. She parades it around for a bit and then settles down in the house. When she goes outside through the doggy door we keep an eye on her and if she starts chasing birds again we let her do a couple of laps and then we call her in so she can hang out again. If we don't have time to watch her, we either close off the doggy door so she only has access to the house or we let her settle down in her crate with a nylon bone. She is getting better and brings herself inside after a couple of laps now instead of staying outside for hours chasing the birds.
We are fairly certain she will not be a good candidate for off leash play unless she is in a fenced yard. She also will not be a good candidate in a home with chickens, caged birds or small pets. She was overly curious about our tester cat but was able to sniff him and walked away on her own after only a quick sniff. He is not a runner, so we put her as unknown with cats because we suspect she would chase them if they ran. We would like a home for her without cats to prevent any issues.
Taz is a great dog for all of those Springer Spaniels lovers out there! She is true to her breed and is a field dog through and through. She would love a home that is dedicated to the idiosyncrasies of the field style temperament of the breed. We don't want to scare anyone off with the name the represents a Tasmanian Devil, but we do want "field spaniel educated" adopters for her. This is not the dog for first time adopters.
Taz's adoption fee is $250.00 plus a $10.99 microchip registration fee. She is vaccinated, microchipped, spayed, and heart worm negative.
