Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Scooter is a typical Chihuahua - he needs time to warm up to you but once he does, he is your best friend. He is a little guy weighing 12.8 lbs and approximately 8 years old. Definitely he would do best in an adult home.
Here is what Scooter's foster family had to say about him:
We quickly fell in love with this smart, cuddly, little guy. As I write this, he’s just gone done the hall, knocked on the bedroom door and dove under the covers with my husband. He’s a wonderful companion; he will go EVERYWHERE with you. If that’s what you want then he may be the dog for you. He would fit into any family who wants a dog who adores your attention. Scooter is in excellent health and appears to have been well looked after. He has had some dental work including several tooth extractions. Scooter is energetic and agile. He can jump and play one minute and curl up for a nap the next. We have found him easy to fit into any activity responding well to basic commands and tone of voice. He is eager to please. I would judge his shedding level as low. He was easy to bath, loves getting dried off and brushed.
Scooter is a little shy at first. He needs a little time to accept you. He has been appropriate and polite with everyone as long as they are not too forward with him at first. If pushed he will snarl and snap. It’s all for show as he doesn’t hurt you. I think he would fit well into any family that understands that he may take a little time to warm up. He does step back from a strange situation until he has had time to assess. Scooter is hesitant at first to truly warm up and trust. He may growl if you are too pushy to get him to cuddle but once he is all in he is hilarious, rubbing his head and wiggling all over you He is not happy to have you touch his ears and feet but with time and practice he will relent. Scooter was happy to meet our dog. We start our foster dogs with a pack walk before bringing him into our home. The two get along very nicely after that. When we see other dogs he gets his hackles up and is a bit a ‘little big man’. It’s all show as he wants a doggy friend to play once he has had a chance again, to get to know the new friend. Scooter may want to chase the cat but once instructed that is wrong, he obeys nicely. He is interested in what the cat gets to eat and, while he hasn’t yet, he may figure out how to get at those dishes.
Scooter seems to know when he will be included in outings or when he is staying home. He is quiet and still as we leave. He meets us happily when we return. He was fearful at the dog groomer and was especially uncooperative to get his nails clipped. I believe the whole situation was strange for him. Some work with him to get him familiar with the place and people will improve this shortly. Scooter likes everything...cuddling, sleeping under a blanket, chewing on a bone, going in the car, going to the park for a walk...honestly, I can’t think what he doesn’t like to do as long as he can do it with you.
In our home, he is calm. We seldom hear him bark. If you sit down, he parks himself beside you or goes to the toy box to amuse himself. He is well behaved and quiet. Tell him to get into his crate and he happily complies. Only time we have heard him bark is if surprised. He’s extremely attentive to all that is happening. I believe he is a typical, well behaved and well loved Chihuahua.
Scooter has demonstrated good house manners. Set boundaries and expectations as you wish. He is clever and eager to please. Scooter knows his name. He has so many words and commands...come, sit, down, no, off, stay...walk, out, dinner...he is a smart little guy and should be expected to do his best. He is very capable. Scooter is fully house trained. He will come and ask you to take him out if you pay attention. Otherwise, he seems to do well with a regular and normal schedule for his needs...when you get up in the morning, after eating, before going to bed, etc. He needs to go out in the middle of the night. Make sure he has done his business before you go back in. We did not use the crate at first as we felt we could trust him. When we did put up the crate and put in a blanket he enjoyed crawling under, he was very happy to spend time in there. He seems quite happy to spend the night in his crate or under the covers with you.
Walking him on our property on leash he does well because he is familiar with his setting. In a new location his walking on leash could some work. He weaves back and forth and has his nose to the ground. Scooter does not try to bolt. We can open the door to get in the car and say, Ok..let’s go, get in the car...and he waits at the door to open so he can jump in. He has slipped out of a loose collar and comes right to you when called. He loves the car and sits nicely. Our dog has never behaved better than rides with Scooter.
This is a companion dog best for someone who never plans on being alone in a room. Scooter will love you, he will make you laugh, you will be very lucky to welcome him into your life. As long as there are people who want his attention and love, I believe Scooter will adapt. He is one very lovely and loving dog.
