My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Ozzie II is a handsome 6-8 year old beagle mix who is looking for a warm bed to lie on, good food, and lots of love. He is a bit larger than the average beagle at 45 pounds, but that just means there is more of him to love!

Ozzie appears to have had it a bit rough in the past. He was found as a stray and has some scarring/hair loss on his nose and ears. His teeth are worn way down, and the vet thinks it is from chewing on bars of a cage. Ozzie also had several lumps removed while in foster care, and one was a mast cell tumor. The vet said this is not the kind that spreads, and he needs no further treatment---he is able to live a normal, healthy life, though his new family will need to monitor the area in case of a regrowth.

Ozzie is just the sweetest guy you will ever meet. He has a very chill, laid-back personality and is not really fazed by anything. He is very quiet and does not bark even when his two foster siblings are barking like crazy….he will simply trot over curiously to see what all the commotion is about! In fact, we’ve only ever heard him bark once----at a bumblebee!! Lol!

Ozzie loves everyone he meets and is friendly to all. He did very well being poked and prodded at the vet. He was up on the exam table for nearly 30 minutes and had several needle sticks….just stood there calmly, leaning against the vet tech the whole time. Everyone there just loved him! He does very well with other dogs and shows a friendly but not overly enthusiastic demeanor. When one of his foster siblings growls at him (she’s just kinda like that) Ozzie will walk away. When he sees other dogs in the
neighborhood he looks interested but does not bark or pull to get near them, he’s just very mellow. I believe he would do fine with or without other dogs in the home.

Ozzie is becoming more playful now that he has settled into his foster home and likes to play with toys. He is not destructive and doesn’t chew on furniture (though he has suddenly taken an interest in foster mom’s slippers in the past couple days!). He definitely will find and get into anything with food, however—he is very greedy (maybe from having to fend for himself on the streets) so anything that smells like food is fair game to him.

Ozzie is crate trained, and is crated during the work day and at night. He is housetrained as long as he is taken outside regularly, as he does not signal that he needs to go potty. He does fine on a normal schedule and only had a couple of accidents at his foster home in the beginning as he adjusted to the routines. If he is monitored he should do just fine. He keeps his crate dry and also does not mark in the house.

Ozzie is just an overall great, mellow guy who loves people, food, and being petted and loved on.

NOTE: Dogs may be located in any of our six volunteer states (WI, IL, IN, OH, PA, MI).
