**MUST READ WHOLE DESCRIPTION**
Duke is around 2 1/2 years old and is a Potcake from Abacos in the Bahamas. He came to us just over a year ago with a condition that causes cysts to form, which puppies outgrow once they mature. Due to this condition he was on heavy steroids and pain medication which has altered his perception of some things, leading to behaviors which make him tough to place.
Duke is definitely a happy boy in his mind, extremely playful, will play fetch all day long, he loves walks, loves his toys and bones and loves having a set routine. He does however have his downsides that make him tough to place due to the medication effecting him mentally. Oh and if you have a kiddie pool he will be all over it!
Duke needs a home without other dogs because he can get possessive over his "babies" (stuffed animals) and he does not read dogs intentions correctly and vice versa so things can escalate quickly. He also needs a home without kids, as well as one that is pretty routine without a lot of visitors. He does not have a problem with cats here and some dogs he is okay with, but he has certain behaviors that cause a lot of dogs to end up in fights with him. A fenced in yard is also a must for this guy and an adopter who will listen to our instructions with Duke on what his triggers are, who will be confident when he shows signs of barrier aggression for example and is calm enough to not escalate the situation by yelling or wanting to grab Duke. Duke does mean well and he is an amazing dog, but his aggressive behaviors do not typically match whats going on mentally so he is a challenge. Someone who understands redirection, how your body language is effecting the dog and who is patient is key.
He is fully vaccinated, microchipped, neutered, on heartworm prevention, flea prevention, dewormed and healthy minus his "predictably unpredictable" behaviors.
If you think you are the right fit for Duke please email us at islanddogrescue@yahoo.com and tell us why. We get a ton of people who are interested who do not fit his needs, so please do not forget to include this information or we will not respond.
