My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Surrendered into our care last week, this young and shy cavy is learning to trust his new foster parents, and adjusting well to his new surroundings. His tale is sad, although one all too familiar to us: At only a few weeks of age, young Brody was purchased at a pet store, as a gift to a young child, who soon lost interest. As the parents had no intention of stepping in, and continuing to provide care, they offered young Brody to anyone willing to take him. Their housekeeper took Brody in, but only to find herself allergic, and in over her head.

Sadly, at no point did any of the former people in Brody’s life take it upon themselves to learn about guinea pig behaviors and needs, such as proper housing, diet, and the importance of out-of-cage time. He was housed in an inappropriately small enclosure, without a single enrichment item, and fed too many fatty foods with no diversity. He was never exposed, or introduced to other guinea pigs, examined by a vet, or properly socialized.

We are hard at work to have Brody understand he is safe, respected, loved, and properly cared for, and that we will make sure his forever family will be well educated in all things guinea pig.

If you think this can be you, and you want to give Brody that dreamed forever home, please reach out to our adoption coordinators by emailing adopt@emptycagescollective.org. Also, check out our website (http://emptycagescollective.org), to read up on guinea pig housing, daily care, diet, and medical diligence.

*Please note- Guinea pigs are incredibly social creatures that thrive in pairs or groups, and we never really know about their true personalities until they are living among other members of their species. Empty Cages aims to respect their natural bonds, so we only adopt guinea pigs in pairs, or to homes that already have one or more.

**During an adoption with Empty Cages Collective, you will get an orientation on guinea pig handling, diet, care, appropriate enclosures, and out of cage time space/time needed. If you already have one guinea pig, he/she will have an opportunity to meet the possible mate(s), so you can see first hand how they will get along. Our adoption coordination can also assist you with information on how to continue with the introductions, what to expect, and what is a realistic timeframe for complete bonding.
