Here's what the humans have to say about me:
LOOKING FOR FOREVER FOSTER - After having her blood panel checked again last week, and although the results came back in her favor stabilized and in better condition then when we first brought her in, Fries’ time with us on Earth is not going to be for as long as we hoped. To sum up her kidney disease, Fries contracted heart worm while she was in the Bahamas. In rare cases such as hers, her little body over produced protein to fight the heart worm. Her kidney’s could not process the exorbitant amount of protein deposits her body was producing and essentially the protein started to burn holes in her kidneys, causing close to 80% kidney failure completely. Along with Dr. Pressler, a canine and feline kidney specialist at ACCESS, and Dr. Lisa at Malibu Coast, we have decided it would be best moving forward to not treat Fries’ heart worm. With the heart worm treatment she would have such a big die off of the adult parasites that it would cause a tremendous inflammatory reaction (which is what got her into this kidney disease in the first place) that it could potentially throw her immediately into end-stage kidney disease, causing a more sudden and painful end for Fries. Moving forward, we are treating her as a chronic renal failure dog and putting her on a program that will make her comfortable for the next few months. She has a lot of life, spirit and love left in her and she is not ready to go quite yet.
We are looking for a for always fostered home for Fries where she has the opportunity to be the only dog in the home. Fries has made it quite clear her main objective is cuddles, love and relaxing in a tranquil environment. Fries is currently in a home with three other dogs and while they do give her space, she tends to get upset when they get too close and will growl at them as a warning to get away, and is constantly vying for the attention of her foster Mom often times pushing the other dogs out of the way. We would like this time for Fries to be just about her, in a setting where she doesn’t have to feel like she needs to be on guard and in a home where her final days are filled with what she’s always wanted, love, affection and a chance to be man/woman’s best friend. The HIT Living Foundation will cover all costs for Fries and will be fully available for vet visit transport, etc… If you’re interested in providing Fries the for always foster home she deserves, please feel free to reach out with any questions or fill out a foster app on our website www.hitlivingfoundation.com/adoption-application.
Fries - 2.5 yr old, spayed, female Bahamian Potcake (The potcake dog is a mixed-breed dog type found on several Caribbean islands. Its name comes from the congealed peas and rice mixture that local residents traditionally eat, as the rice that cakes to the bottom of the pot would go to the dogs.) - will be available for adoption after vet check up! We still encourage you to fill out an adoption application if you would like to meet Fries.
Fries was found living in a poverty stricken community in Abaco, Bahamas last fall during a spay and neuter clinic in the community. She was emaciated and in desperate need of medical care. The wonderful Abaco shelter took her in and brought her back up to her best health of their capability. Through a snap blood test, they were able to determine she did have tick fever and heartworm. The shelter staff was able to kill the tick fever and provide a slow kill program for her heart worm (heart worm in not contagious to other dogs and treatable with the proper protocol!). When we were down in Abaco in December for a spay and neuter clinic, we actually met Fries and remember her being one of the friendliest and sweetest Potcakes at the shelter. Due to the complicated nature of getting dogs off the island, we were unable to bring Fries or any other dog back with us. This visit however, we were able to bring a Potcake back to the states with us. After learning one of the dogs we initially thought we were going to bring back wasn’t quite ready to be released, our hearts immediately turned to sweet baby girl Fries. Traveling by car, boat and air, Fries has officially landed state side, seen the amazing Dr. Lisa at Malibu Coast Animal Hospital where we are now waiting on lab work to come in and implement a protocol to kill her heart worm for good. Once her lab work is back and we have the green light with a protocol and all other health looks good, Fries will be available for adoption. We still encourage you to fill out an adoption application if you would like to meet Fries.
Fries is an incredibly sweet girl with an eagerness to please. She has the laid back island vibe attitude and is very happy sitting outside, smelling the fresh air and napping. Any type of strenuous activity including hiking, running, or even long walks is something she would love to hear stories about. Cuddles, pets and any type of affection is her speed. Fries lived in an area with three other dogs and while did not engage in play, she got along just fine. It did take Fries about a day to warm up to our GSD; Fries kept her distance and gave our GSD a little growl if she got too close. By day two, Fries and our GSD were lying down next to each other and sitting for treats. Fries knows her basic commands and realizes the place to go potty, is outside. Fries does great in a car, golf cart, plane and boat and could make a wonderful therapy or emotional support animal as well. Fries is a true gem and any home would be lucky to have her as an addition!
