My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Ferguson is a 2 year old black male with cropped but flopped ears. He came from an animal shelter where his owners turned him in. He gets along with male and female dogs, large and small. His cat test went very well, but we do not know how he is with children. Ferguson is a bit rough around the edges in the manners dept. An obedience course will work wonders for this boy, he is so excited to get rubs, love and attention from humans, he gets carried away. Someone with time to work with him on obedience can make a huge difference in a short time. He appears to be house trained and is in good health. Ferguson is a fence jumper, so a six foot fence is required. He does not load well in a vehicle at this point, doesn't seem to know what riding is all about. Once in the vehicle, he does very well. Ferguson came to MAGDRL in July 2008.
Update 8/15/08 - Ferguson is safely in a foster home and is busting to get out and have some fun! He's a wild child with no manners and no sense of appropriate behavior. On the plus side, he's been great with the foster's teeny tiny dogs and her female dane. From the foster: Ferg decided to use Mimi (an Italian greyhound) as a head rest. It was adorable. He really is a sweet boy. I think as soon as he learns what is appropriate and what is not he will have no problems finding a home. I took Ferguson to Petsmart for his first obedience class (which turned out to be postponed) and he got a GREAT reaction from people, bad manners and all!
Update 10/6/08 - Things are going well with Ferguson. Now that he has learned what sitting is all about we have been getting some real training in. Ferg has gotten much better with not jumping up. He still paws at me quite a lot, but I prefer pawing to knocking me over. He will graduate from obedience class soon. He does very good down stays, but the sit stays leave a little to be desired... He will need a lot of work with coming when called. He is walking nicely on a leash when there is little to no distraction. He had a slight interaction with an overly aggressive dog who lunged at him, but he kept it to a vocal level and did not respond violently otherwise. Ferg is still mouthy right when I let him out of the dog bedroom. Other than that he doesn't really mouth much anymore. I have not been crating him for the last 2 weeks or so. Nothing has been destroyed. I think he just lays on the bed till the door opens again. He actually goes to the room by himself (or with very little guidance). I think he likes not being crated.
Update 10/15/08 - Ferguson graduated beginner obedience today! What a GOOD BOY!
Update 4/21/09 - Unfortunately, Ferguson is back in foster care. He was adopted out and did very well for several months with his new family. Unbeknownst to them, he developed an ear infection and, when the family's little boy played with his ear, Ferguson bit him. MAGDRL took Ferguson back to assess him further and we've found that he reacts very strongly to anyone poking around in his ears, including his foster mom of many months. In fact, he had to be muzzled to clean his ears until the infection cleared up. As a result of this incident, Ferguson cannot be placed with children and will need a dog-savvy home that is willing to muzzle him for vet care. In all other ways, he's been the perfect gentleman--he just doesn't do well with pain/discomfort, and his new family will need to be practical when it comes to that aspect of his care.
