This friendly, happy girl came to Lab Rescue as an owner surrender from Butte County. Her foster connected us with another rescue that helped bring Josie into our program. The owner had to return to work full-time after the recent passing of her husband, leaving Josie home alone for 12 hour days, and she knew that wasn’t fair to Josie.
What Josie’s Foster says:
Josie likes routine. She starts the day with a ball in her mouth and demands (by barking) for one - 10 rounds of fetch. Next comes breakfast (she’s a good eater) and another round of fetch (she can be demanding). After allowing me a cup or two of coffee, she’s at the front door, reminding me it’s time for our morning walk. She can easily walk for a 30-45 minutes (she needs to lose some weight but so do I!). Some days we encounter other dogs that she barks and whines at (usually big dogs). I think it may be fear. She tries to chase squirrels and birds. She needs more leash training. She is quite strong and pulls pretty hard the first 10-15 minutes of our walk.
Small children are probably not a good idea due to her strength and size. (She is just a very big puppy!) She gets along well with my two senior Labs now. I think she just needed time to trust them. Maybe she could get used to a dog savvy cat. Back home for her morning nap and then we play it by ear. She likes to follow me as I move around the house and garden. She was sleeping on a dog bed, next to my bed but has since decided my bed is more her style. She sleeps all night.
What Josie’s Rescue Rep says:
Josie is more of a people dog, as opposed to a dog’s dog. Her former owner lived in the country, away from urban life. She was able to take Josie on long walks without encountering any sort of traffic, e.g. people, other dogs, cars....Josie is housetrained, likes to play a little fetch, and the previous owner reports she would ignore cats.
We’d like to see Josie in a home where she won’t be left for long stretches of the day. She enjoys the company of her humans and would do well as an only dog and maybe with another dog; it would have to be the right match as Josie gets a little growly having to share her human.
Medical Information: Josie is current on vaccinations, heartworm negative, microchipped, and spayed.
Josie is located in: San Jose

Our volunteers donate their personal time & phones so please only call during reasonable hours (8am - 8pm). The Rescue Rep identified in the dog posting is the only person with information about the dog - please only contact the designated volunteer. We do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week; we do not have a facility where the dogs are housed, they are in foster homes throughout the Bay Area. maybe with another dog; it would have to be the right match as Josie gets a little growly having to share her human.
