Here's what the humans have to say about me:
WE ONLY ADOPT DOGS OUT TO PEOPLE LIVING IN HUMBOLDT COUNTY
Mac could truly be the best friend you've ever had. He is loyal, intelligent, active, tough, loving, and eager to please! Mac is a Kelpie mix that is 40lbs (shouldn't get much bigger) and was born around May 2018. He is potty trained, crate trained, knows "sit", "down", "stay", "come", "leave it", "kennel", "go to your bed", "shake" and reluctantly "drop it". He is good at fetch and can play for hours!
He loves other dogs! He is currently living with cats and doing well with them, but it took 2 months for him to become acclimated and he still needs reminders to give them their space. If he were to go to a home with cats, they need to be very patient while you teach him to respect them. He should not go to a home with birds (including chickens). He can not go to a home with children.
Mac came to Mending Mutts when he was on death row at the county animal shelter. He was too fearful of strangers to be considered adoptable. With patience and socialization, Mac has shown that he isn't afraid anymore! IN FACT, he loves interacting with people! His biggest issue recently is that he needs to learn not everyone wants to be covered in kisses. He has not shown fear associated with anything other than strangers and is generally a very confident dog.
Mac should go to a home with dog experience, ideally herding dog experience. He needs a home that will continue to train him and clearly communicate what you want from him. He has many Kelpie traits and I would recommend any potential adopter read up on them and get a feel for what having a high drive dog is like. He does excellent with training and exercise, and he would be a great hiking buddy (he also runs next to a bike).
