09/17/10: The Value of Life, The Plea for Benevolence, The Necessity of Compassion



NBR currently has 7 dogs who are living in boarding kennels.....Ava, Gustoff, Captain, Rock, Wilco, Tuck, and Phoenix. Sadly, we have not found appropriate foster or permanent homes for them.. The most disheartening thing about this situation is that all of these dogs have the potential to be wonderful dogs, but they can not seem to get a break. They have all been mishandled by people and because of this they are now considered "hard to place".

These dogs have trust issues because people have let them down and NBR is committed to rectifying the wrongs that have been done to them. We are looking for people to foster or adopt who genuinely want to help a dog in the truest sense of the word. Please do not consider taking any of these dogs into your home if you have a big ego or if you are not tolerant enough to allow the dogs to adjust at their own pace. These dogs need someone who understands that their adjustment period could be long, and they will need kind people who have lots of patience. Some of these dogs have been in a foster home previously but they "failed' because the people (who had good intentions) did not comprehend the commitment needed of them. Every time these dogs have a change they are set back in their progress so we are being very cautious about choosing homes for them. NBR will provide as much moral support as you need. We have been very successful turning dogs such as these around and you will need to be able to trust our recommendations and follow our lead.

Ava, Gustoff, Captain, Rock, Wilco, Tuck, and Phoenix all have much love to give, but they will expect you to earn their trust. They will no doubt teach you more about dog behavior then you will ever learn in a book, and you may learn much about yourself and other people as well. Once you earn their trust you will be blessed with a companion who will truly be your best friend forever, and you will be rewarded with the satisfaction that you truly made a difference in a needy dog's life.

Unfortunately boarding costs are expensive and they are draining our bank account. We have set up a Chip-In account to try and offset these expenses. If you cannot help us by taking one of these dogs into your home, please help pay for their expenses until suitable placements can be found. Every one of these dogs would have been killed if NBR did not take them into our rescue program. We feel that all of their lives have meaning and we are proud that we saved them. You can share in that pride by doing whatever you can to help.



06/05/09: ROCK HAS FOUND THE SOFT SIDE OF LIFE

Rock is so happy to be with people who give him the attention and exercise that he needs. We are grateful we were able to rescue Rock from the shelter and we give thanks to his new foster home who answered our plea to help. Below is their report:
"After a bit of anxiety initially, Rock is settling in nicely!!! He loves to run and play with his younger brother Roscoe as well as sleep on their matching dog beds or the "human" bed or couch! They are both doing very well!!

Rock craves human attention, almost as much as he craves attention from Roscoe. He loves to cuddle and be petted, but the minute his "brother" is on the move, Rock needs to go follow him around! Rock has also been attending doggie daycare a couple days a week and is getting along well with his new found playmates.

Initially, Rock wanted to be the "co-pilot" while riding in the car, but now is content to share the back seat with his brother. He is a big, strong boy and pulls somewhat when walking on his leash. We are working on that and it seems the more exercise/walks he gets, the pulling is reduced.

Rock has met his new neighbors and human friends (kids and adults) and greets them with boxer wiggles and kisses!! We are also training him to stay in the yard with our Radio Fence and he has learned to wait for people to come to him in the yard. He hasn't crossed his boundary, just turns around and heads in the other direction when hearing the warning tone.

06/01/09: ROCK WAS IN A HARD PLACE
Rock was surrendered to a shelter who called NBR to ask for help. Luckily, we were able to say “yes” because we had recently approved a new foster home and they agreed to take him into their home. They drove 3 hours to the shelter and Rock was so happy to be going “home” he gave them lots and lots of kisses. PLEASE CONSIDER FOSTERING TO SAVE A DOG’S LIFE. WE CAN NOT HELP THEM WITHOUT YOU.

We contacted the people who surrendered Rock to get more information. We learned that Rock was purchased as a puppy from a breeder for their teenage children. When their children got older, and moved out of the home, the couple wanted to travel. They no longer wanted Rock, and were unsuccessful trying to find him a home on their own, so they dropped him off at the shelter.

Rock was not given much training or exercise. He was let out on a lead or cable and they did not take him for walks. He did not have much interaction with other dogs, nor did he receive much attention. He was crated in a mudroom for long periods of time, during the day when no one was home, and crated at night. We also found out that he lived with a cat and they got along well.

Rock is currently living with another boxer in his foster home. He is attending doggie daycare a few times a week and is doing great. He is finally enjoying the company of other dogs, getting lots of exercise, and thriving on attention. Things that every boxer needs. Rock has been neutered and updated on his shots.

We are awaiting an update from his foster home.
