Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Magee is one of 11 dogs rescued by UYR recently from a horrendous puppy mill in Southern Georgia. Magee is 4 years old and weighs 8.7 pounds. She is being fostered in Orlando, FL.
UPDATED BIO 03/19/2019: Hi everyone, Magee here. Let me tell you how happy I am to be out of that dreadful puppy mill. My foster mom took me to the dogtor to be evaluated and she was surprised that I was healthy because of my so-so-awful background. She says I have this problem with my eyes, called Dry Eye Syndrome, but she gave me some special eye drops and I'm feeling much better. I will need to have these eye drops for the rest of my life.
I'm a little too skinny, but my foster mom has been feeding me some great tasting dog food and I like to eat. I now know what it's like to eat from a bowl and I feel so special to have my own special bowl. Foster mom has this place behind her house - I think she called it a backyard. It was so strange stepping on the grass for the very first time, but now I love it. It's so much fun to run like the wind and it makes me feel so free – it’s a wonderful new feeling I’ve never had before I came to my foster home. I've also discovered these little furry things that make squeaky noises when I chew on them. My foster mom says they are called toys. I had never seen them before, but I sure do love playing with them.
My foster mom takes me for walks in the neighborhood and I love checking out all the new smells. Those smells sure do beat the awful smells from the last place I lived. I'm trying really hard to get the hang of doing my business outside. My foster mom is real patient with me and I just know I'll catch on soon since she tells me I am very smart. I am learning what it's like to be a beloved companion dog and I love it. My foster mom says I'm regaining my puppyhood. I'm lovin' life right now.
Since I've not had a real family before, I think I would like a family where either the mom or dad is retired or works from home. I don't want to be left alone ever again. I think children would be fun, but they have to be old enough to know how to be kind to me –12 years old or older. Another small doggie brother or sister would be good. Oh, I saw something called a cat the other day. I was very nice to the cat, but he was very rude to me. Hmph! Anyway, that's what I have to say for now. The UYR members that pulled Magee were shocked and saddened at the inhumane conditions in which these dogs were living. The property had more than 700 dogs being housed in a warehouse in too-small crates – with more than one dog per crate, and stacked one on top of the other. A majority of the dogs pulled were suffering from malnourishment, sores and abrasions, severe dental disease, matted hair, infections, severe eye injuries, congenital diseases and general severe neglect. The smell alone of the poor dogs was enough to cause a person to be nauseous and these dogs lived 24/7 365 days a year in this environment.
Please watch for postings on all 20 dogs from the puppy mill that came into UYR. This was a huge endeavor that took a lot of supportive members who all volunteered their time and without our amazing fostering members, we would not have been able to save so many. UYR is very proud and humbled to have participated in bringing happiness and new lives and love to 20 little doggies. The vetting expenses on these little dogs will be huge, so if you have been moved by Magee’s story and the stories of the other 19 dogs who are journeying toward wellness and love, please consider making a donation to help UYR continue to participate in rescues of this magnitude.
