Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Serena is a 6 year old, classic Black and Tan female GSD. Serena has completed a board and train program with a trainer. Serena went into the board and train program due to her reactivity towards small dogs and some larger dogs. Serena can be with other dogs who are submissive and listens to her. She is not aggressive towards dogs but will not back away until she has had her say. She is an absolute lover to people and loves to cuddle with her people. She will alert bark at the door or yard to ward away strangers. She is trained in commands, housebroken and loves to go for car rides.
Upon her arrival, the trainer noticed Serena needed some socialization and confidence building. She is unsure how to react towards other dogs and her go to was reactivity to try to “scare them away”. Kind of like a “i will hurt you before you hurt me” sort of thing. Serena quickly learned to trust her handler and that the behavior she was displaying was not acceptable. Serena has taken trips to Petco, PetSmart, Home Depot, and past the local dog parks and showed zero reactivity. Serena doesn’t want to be in trouble, so basic obedience is a breeze. She knows sit, down, wait (this is used before she eats her meals, coming in and out of doors and her kennel), come and heel. Serena, like most gsds, like to be involved with what her person is doing and what’s going on. She settles nicely on “place” in the house in the evenings. She accepts other dogs walking past her but is quick to give them a “hard eye”. Once corrected, even verbally, she snaps out of it.
Serena likes to play fetch and chew on her toys either on her bed or in her crate. She loads up nicely in the car, either in a crate or free riding, and enjoys the ride. She’s pretty good company if you like road trips or even if you like hanging out at home. She tires out quickly due to some arthritis, so she can go on runs up to a mile - mile and a half or about 10 minutes of fetch. She’s a pretty lowkey dog. She has a happy energy and is always excited to see you and be involved in whatever is going on. Serena does display some prey drive and likes to chase birds and would be interested in chasing the livestock next door if given the opportunity. At this time, a home with cats is discouraged unless you are a strong handler willing to keep an eye on her when she’s out in the house.
The ideal home for Serena would be one where she can be involved with her people and be included. Even if it’s hanging out watching movies or sitting in for a car ride to pick up ice cream. Serena’s training is something that needs to be kept up on, so someone who is willing to do so is what she needs. She needs someone who is in charge and that she can trust. She will be quick to revert back to old behaviors if she feels insecure. Serena would prefer a home with no other dogs. Possibly an older, keep to themselves large male dog would be accepted by her, but she would be the most comfortable being the only dog.
