Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Penelope is a 1.5year old American Bulldog mix, fully vetted, altered and microchipped.
Here is what we were given from the people she spent a week with:
Penelope is an amazingly loving girl. She gives kisses enthusiastically and determinedly, and will need someone who is willing to be clear about their boundaries in terms of jumping up/excessive licking. But once the boundaries are set, she knows how to lie down and snuggle peacefully. She’s a gentle soul, and she loves everyone she meets. She is also very enthusiastic in her leash-walking. She desperately wants to stop and play with every dog and lick every person, so again, she would do well with someone who can put in the time and patience for good leash training. Penelope loves chew toys—ropes, bones, squeaky stuffies—and she plays with them well. She likes fetch and tug-of-war, as well as just chewing and shaking her toys. She does sometimes steal off-limits items like shoes and other articles of clothing. She’s usually good about swapping for something she’s allowed, though. She just needs someone who will notice when she’s got something she shouldn’t have.
Penelope has been very good in her crate. She doesn’t love it, but she goes in willingly if you throw a treat in the back. Sometimes she cries/barks for 5-10 minutes when she is first crated, but then she settles down and watches what’s going on or sleeps. She’s very good in the crate at night—we had success with 8-9.5 hour nights, having taken her water bowl away 2 hours before bedtime.
While she was with us, we had trouble with the times when we were in the house but needed to be in a room she was not allowed in. Penelope’s future owner should be aware that, while she’s well-behaved most of the time, she does also get into things she shouldn’t chew, and she often cries when you are not in the room with her.
Penelope had a play date with three other dogs once while she was with us, and she absolutely loved it. She plays pretty rough-and-tumble, but showed no signs of aggression. I think she would do really well in a home with another active dog who can match her enthusiasm, and a backyard where they can play.
Penelope slipped her harness once during her week with us. Luckily she was cold so she ran and stood in a doorway so I could get her, but she’s fast, and I wouldn’t want it to happen again. We recommend a heavy-duty, escape-proof harness like the RuffWear Web Master Harness to keep her safe on walks, at least until she’s leash-trained enough not to back out of her collar or harness when she’s determined to go in a certain direction.
Penelope is a smart dog, which is both amazing in terms of her trainability and character, and potentially troublesome as she can be willful and clever about how to get into trouble! (She figured out our door handles within 48 hours.)
Penelope does bark when interesting things are happening outside. It’s not excessive and, as with her other behaviors, she shows signs of being responsive to boundaries being set/being told “no.”
Essentially, Penelope is the perfect dog. She’s the perfect dog for someone who has the time and energy to dedicate to serious training with lots of treats, and who will enjoy her loving enthusiasm. She needs a place where she can run around and, ideally, someone else to run around with.
Just another note, in case of apartment weight-limits: she’s currently 44 pounds, and our vet recommended that she should get up to 50
