Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Cali spent 458 days in a local West Michigan shelter on a court case hold because her jerkoff prior owner abused her and Cali could not be released for rescue pull until said jerkoff was found guilty. He was. We hope he rots. When he was convicted and we found out she was off the hold, we pulled her the second we could. We WANTED HER - because she deserves a forever that makes her past forgotten and we knew she would need time to adjust after that long in the slammer through no fault of her own. We knew she would likely need to be an only pet - and need a fence - and we knew we would likely have her for a long term foster until we found her forever.
Cali came into the shelter at 37 pounds (severely underweight). She is currently about 55. Her body is covered in callouses from lying on a concrete floor for so long. Her skin is a mess and we're literally watching it heal now that she is on a much improved diet including coconut oil every day both in her food and topically - but her skin will always look beat up - some of it will never grow back.
This dog HUGS. Hugs > Food > Anything else. She flipping loves loves snuggling and people. She will run past a full bowl of chicken just to hug you. It's the greatest feeling in the whole world you feel so needed and loved. She jumps up to say hello - You will never train her not to jump up on your and give you hugs it's just gonna happen - so we'd need to do a meet and greet with any smaller kids to make sure she doesn't knock them over.
She's not food motivated. We've had a heck of a time figuring out what will make her scarf a bowl of food down or what treats she loves.
She's strong AF. Fence required - she does zoomies. Needs a strong human to handle her on a leash - even in and out of the vet. Would do better in a fenced in yard vs walks every day. She's done great in the snow. She kinda hops like a bunny - it's adorable.
She is going to be the BEST SLEEPING BUDDY EVER - napping is second to hugging but it's a close contest - she will have to sleep in your bed and will give you so many hugs every day she will heal your heart and make you forget the world blows chunks sometimes..... to have been through so much and still have nothing but love to give - this is a very special dog.
She was spayed 2/25/19.
We beyond love her. The volunteers from the shelter who spent a year and a half caring for her love her. There are a lot of people who can't wait to see this girl in her forever home and spoiled completely rotten. We are late for work most days because snuggling her just seems like a better idea than going to work.
***we have literally decided at the rescue that sleeping in your bed is mandatory for you to adopt her. She slept 458 days in a kennel - she doesn't need any more days in a kennel - and she's the best bed dog EVER we're not wasting that on someone who wants to keep her kenneled at night. Nope. The little snore machine gets a bed and a human spooning her in her forever home.
She's mostly housebroken - she spent so long in the shelter where it didn't matter where she peed - and before that she was kept in a back yard so again, it didn't matter where she peed - we have her listed as needs an experienced adopter just because it may take some work and a few accidents to acclimate her into your home.
She's ours for as long as it takes to find the right fit. She is worth it...
