Here's what the humans have to say about me:
What happens to a Doberman that is not properly socialized and lives with a naive toddler? She becomes reactive to any new thing within her surroundings. And what happens when a reactive dog is startled by a toddler while sleeping? Unfortunately, it may bite. That’s the story of Molly in a nutshell. She has lived with her family since she was a puppy and is now 3-1/2 years old and has several unfortunate bite incidents that had clear avoidable triggers caused by ways one does not treat a dog: toddler smacking sleeping dog, toddler lying on top of sleeping dog, kitten jumping on dog. Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt, but it is time to rehome this poor girl into a place where she will feel safe and will not feel threatened.
While we usually try to avoid taking in a dog who has bitten, we feel it’s worthwhile to give Molly a chance in a home where she will feel comfortable and away from the things that threaten her. In general, Molly is very friendly with people, likes to play, loves to be with people and being petted, is not destructive in a home (which is good since she is not crate trained). However, finding an appropriate home for Molly is going to be difficult but we are reaching out with full disclosure to try to find somebody special who is willing to take her on and work with her. Molly is currently living in a kennel and is EXTREMELY anxious and fearful, completely unsocialized, and terrified of everything. The uprooting has left her with extreme separation anxiety and we are seeking a home where somebody is home most of time and can help her overcome her fear of being left alone.
The only way we can help Molly find a new and better life is to find her a quiet home where somebody is home most of the day, can gently and patiently work with her to help her build more confidence and overcomes the fears she’s developed and to decrease her reactivity. We are looking for a home that has experience with behavior modification or one that is willing to LISTEN and to LEARN as we guide you through do’s and don’ts in extreme detail. We do not want to give up on this poor girl and DPRPA will also hire and pay for a vet behaviorist to work with the home and Molly. Her new home should be patient and caring to assist Molly through her difficult days. A fenced-in yard is also required so she can run and sniff around to become familiar with her new surroundings on her own.
We are looking for a real hero willing to step up and welcome Molly into their home. If you would like to learn more and be considered, please fill out an adoption application at https://www.dprpa.org/applicationform
