My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Elvis is in the building and is now ready to join your family. One year old, 11 pounds. A little backstory: brought in to the MCDS with a severe injury that prevented him from walking caused him to be very reactive when touched. A broken pelvis in two places and a broken femur will do that! Pelvis repair was not possible due to the femur break. Best option was for Elvis to morph into a three-legged dog. Thank you Dr. Suchy for doing such a great job. Post op was difficult as he was still in pain and reactive for about a week. After that, Elvis ventured out of his bed (because I placed his food further and further away). Later he ventured out of his room looking for company and signalling with his tail that he was ready for friends. Stitch removal was quite a project as his memory of the surgery was obvious. Thankfully, Dr. Larsen dropped by and the two of us managed it. To say Elvis started to bloom would be an understatement. Balancing, running, and playing with his personal trainer have prepared him to move along. Maybe we went too far but he thinks he is a really big dog now. Still wary of strangers, he can be bought with treats. Elvis LOVES to be on the bed, preferably under the covers (Doxie in his DNA?), is crate trained, walks well on a leash, and has become a kissy-face dog.

A special note from Salem Dogs to potential adopters: People are amazed when they get a quick response from SD. Evidently the norm is quite a delay before hearing back from the rescue group. There are a few things you can do to set yourself apart and get a quick response. 1. register your search and when a dog that matches your criteria is posted, you will be notified. Get back immediately! 2. in your first note, tell the rescue group about yourself, family, home, yard, fence, other pets, work situation, veterinarian, and why you are interested in this particular dog.
We hear so often that "the dog I wanted was taken and there was a waiting list." Improve your chances of being selected as a 10-star home for the dog by providing information. DON'T expect a response from an email that says "Is this dog still available?" or "How much is this dog?" Those are statements that indicate you are surfing and are not really serious about adopting a dog.
