This gorgeous big girl is Shelby! She about 1 year old and still very puppyish. She was found as a stray in Brooklyn hanging out in a park, and the police enticed her into their car with treats (she is VERY shy). The shelter was a very frightening place for Shelby, and although she was given the best of care the loud noises and unfamiliar surroundings made her very withdrawn. We knew we could help so off we went to save her!
We think Shelby is a boxer/mastiff mix. Her previous owners docked her tail so we believe they thought she was either a boxer or a rottweiler mix. Shelby is sad she doesn't have a tail, but that doesn't stop her from going in circles chasing her little nub! She is goofy, ever so friendly, and somewhat shy. She has come right out of her shell in her foster home, and she is now best buddies with her foster siblings (three other dogs) and her foster family. Shelby now readily greats all visitors, and although loud noises still startle her a bit she is very excited to meet new people.
Shelby loves squeaky toys, bones, and all sorts of treats. She adores other dogs and we think she would be perfect in a home with another dog who can show her the ropes. She doesn't have a mean bone in her body, she loves adults, kids and pretty much anyone that is gentle and will let her climb into their lap. She is still pretty scared walking on a leash, so a fenced in yard would be great (but not a deal breaker). She is 99% housetrained and will still need some training along with positive reinforcement. She really just wants to please you, and she is very smart and learns quickly.
Shelby is about one year old and weighs 65 pounds. She is housetrained, crate trained, up to date on all her shots, spayed, heartworm negative, and microchipped. She would be a great family dog!
To adopt Shelby, fill out our online dog application , or download our Microsoft Word dog application and return it to sheltersurvivors@live.com. It will help expedite the process.
