Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Snickers is a cross post for Jefferson County Animal Control. If you are interested in adopting Beau please send an email to jeffersoncountyanimalcontrol@gmail.com or call (304) 728-3289.
Meet Snickers. He is a neutered 1.5-year-old "boxador"....a boxer/Labrador mix. Snickers was surrendered to Jefferson County (WV) Animal control by his owners because they didn't have time for him. He had lived with the family for about 6 months. We don't know anything about his life before that.
Snickers shared his previous home with a young child (sorry, we don't know exactly what "young" means here) and a Dachshund. We don't know if he has had any "cat experience."
Snickers' dark coat is short and soft, with the subtlest of brown brindle markings. His eyes are soft and warm, and he looks at you with the hope that you'll PLEASE play with him! He loves wrestling with his Jolly Ball in the exercise courtyard.
Snickers is an eager learner. We've been working on clicker training using positive reinforcement and force-free methods, and he is learning very quickly. He knows a number of cues, including "sit" and "shake." We're working on "stay," and he indicates that he has a little familiarity with that cue. He is having a little trouble learning how to walk politely on leash, but I think that's because he's just so excited to explore the world when he finally has the chance to get out of his kennel. Because he's a smart dog and very food motivated, we have every confidence that he will be able to learn those skills from a calm and patient coach once he's in a stable environment with adequate chances to get out some of his adolescent energy.
Snickers has been in the shelter since mid-September. That's almost 4 months of living in a kennel with no chance to interact with other dogs and only brief periods to exercise or go for walks. He is a happy adolescent dog, but life in the shelter is starting to take its toll. He is easily excited whenever there is any activity near his kennel. And when we take our walks, he is always looking expectantly at the vehicles that pass by (especially white pickups), as if he's looking for his people.
Snickers is a dog who is made to love and be loved. He melts into you when you gently touch him. He trusts that the world is a good and safe place. He will continue to make wonderful strides forward in a home where he continues to receive positive training, encouragement, and love. He longs for a family who will give him the calm guidance and coaching he needs while at the same time honoring that he is a young dog with lots of energy. In return, Snickers will be a devoted and loving companion who will reward his committed adopters or foster family with a heart full of love.
