Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Schafer is a male, 8-week-old German Shepherd puppy, weighing in at just over 10 lbs. It’s possible that he could be mixed with something else but we have no way of knowing for certain. Schafer has a short coat that is primarily black with a lot of tan on his face, throat, chest and legs. His ears seems to be 50/50 black/tan, so it’s hard to say which color they’ll be when he has his adult coat.
Schafer came to stay with us on the evening of January 18 (Friday) and has been staying in a home with two adult humans, one teenager, other dogs and puppies.
Being that he’s just a baby, Schafer is not house-trained yet but we have been working on it and he has been doing very well – even despite the frigid temperature. In fact, Schafer isn’t fond of the cold weather, either, and is realizing that, the faster he does his potty outside, the faster he can come back inside where it’s warm. He is also doing very well with sleeping in his crate at night but, if I’m not fast enough with getting him outside in the morning then, he will have an accident in his crate. This is my fault, not his. Because it has been so cold outside, I have not worked on walking him on a leash, yet, but he has been wearing a collar to help him get used to that. He’s also starting to come, when called, but it’s a work in progress.
Schafer has lots of toys and chew bones for his entertainment but, I haven’t noticed him favoring any one thing over the other. He seems to enjoy chewing on his bone just as much as he enjoys playing tug with a stuffed animal or rope toy. He was actually OK with getting his bath the first night he came home. The water didn’t seem to bother him at all and I find myself wondering if this boy is going to like swimming when the warmer weather returns. While he’s only been with us for a few days, I can tell you that he’s already changed from being a party-animal puppy to also being an absolute lovebug. What I mean by that is, instead of just playing with a toy or chew bone, he’s also started choosing to snuggle up to me and sleep on my lap or up against my legs. He loves getting belly rubs, too.
For the most part, Schafer is your typical, overall happy-go-lucky puppy, both adorable and lovable, but he’s also very smart. He is going to make the perfect addition in a home with someone who understands the intelligence of German Shepherds. With the proper love, patience and training, this little boy will have no boundaries to what he can learn and do.
