Here's what the humans have to say about me:
This very special boy is Scooter. He's a 1 year old Dachshund with a heart of gold. Unfortunately, Scooter had a rough time before coming into rescue. He was run over by a car, left on the road, then his owner did nothing for him except banish him outside in the harsh winter weather. He received NO vet care, as well as no appropriate care from his owner. He was paralyzed as a result of being run over, and although we will never know now, he may have been able to use his back legs again had he received appropriate medical care. Scooter had open, infected wounds covering his stomach and legs from dragging himself over rough, rocky terrain for over 2 months. One wound went almost to the bone. He had a urinary tract infection as well, was underweight and had skin issues due to poor nutrition. Scooter does not need to have his bladder expressed like many paralzyed dogs, but he DOES NOT have control over his bodily functions and will go without realizing it. We do not want to sugarcoat Scooter's situation. He is not for the average owner and he requires much more care than most people can, or are willing, to give. We have purchased him a cart and he is doing well with it, but has to be watched at all times because he can easily turn over in it and get hung up. When he is out of his cart and urinates, he will start dragging himself through it before you can get to him, so you not only have the mess on the floor to clean up, but you must also rinse Scooter off in order to keep the urine from staying on his skin. If you must have a housebroken dog, then Scooter is NOT for you. He cannot help going in the house. He will never be housebroken. Scooter will also require more vet care than the average dog, especially to regularly test his urine for crystals. He is on a daily supplement to try to keep him in check, but he can easily get out of balance. He has to be watched around stairs or anything that poses a danger to him, because he doesn't seem to think he has a problem and just goes barreling ahead no matter what. We are not trying to discourage anyone from adopting Scooter, but what we are trying to do is make sure people understand that Scooter takes alot of time and energy and all it would take is a few days of not properly caring for him to see his wounds start to return. It has literally taken months to get his wounds healed up as well as his other issues. His skin is looking better now, but still has a ways to go. He is being fed top of the line dog food which is making a noticeable difference. We have intentionally shared the more difficult aspect of Scooter's care first for good reason. We don't want anyone to consider Scooter as a permanent member of their family without understanding just how much dedicated care he will require. And he is only 1 year old and as long as he has good care throughout his life, the vet sees no reason that he can't live for many years. The average person will soon tire of the novelty of a dog in a cart and begin to slack with his care. That is why we will require follow-up visits long after Scooter is adopted. We have to know that Scooter is never allowed to return to the condition we found him in. NOW for Scooter's irresistable qualities......he is the most delightful, comical, loving dog you will ever meet. He loves attention, but is fiercely independent as well. He is literally tucked into bed every night by his adoring foster mom who covers him up snuggly with a soft blanket. He loves breakfast and dinner time. Scooter enjoys being outside with you and just like any die-hard Doxie, he loves to dig, so if you can't appreciate holes in your manicured lawn or prized flower bed, Scooter would not be a good addition to your family. He gets along very well with other dogs, will tolerate a cat, but does not do well with feathered creatures of any kind! Scooter is an amazing little dog.
