Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Date of this post: 1/16/19
"Big Al" is a very special case. He was pulled out of our county animal shelter last week, he is a huge guy that loves head rubs and face rubs. He has a big pudgy tomcat face (still a tomcat as an adult). We do not know his history. He is being treated for skin problems and ear mites, it looks like he has been without a home for a very long time. However, he is such a smoosh ball, he is so cool! He loves to stretch out (he is super long!) and make "air biscuits", has obviously been well socialized in his past and loved by a human :) He is a humble 13 pounds and he is actually underweight.
Big Al has serious medical concerns, and needs a home that can give him love. Big Al has the FIV virus, which means his immune system will not function as well as a normal cat. FIV positive cats can live long lives, should be kept indoors or let outside only when supervised, and he will need closer monitoring than the average cat. He also has a secondary mouth inflammation which is common with cats who have FIV. Regular dental care is advised.
Big Al's serious condition is that he has heartworms. While not diagnosed as common in pet cats, he has at least one adult heartworm present. This may cause him breathing problems in the future.
This is one absolutely outstanding kitty. He would probably do best by himself at this time and he actually needs to be somewhat of a "couch potato" as long as he tests positive for the heartworm infection. He has shown the tendency to be an EXCELLENT couch potato so far.......
He will need monthly prevention such as Revolution or feline Heartguard to be sure that more worms don't continue to form inside his heart. He will need regular veterinary checkups. Please email with questions. We don't want him to have to be euthanized, he deserves a loving home!
