~~Meet Koda!
Koda is an 11 year old bassador (bassett hound/Labrador mix). This breed really has the best personality! They have the laidback and cuddly personality of a basset hound along with the fun-loving best friend vibe of a lab! Unlike many Basset hounds, Koda is not a barker! He will bark for a short time when his foster mom leaves for work but never barks when she is home. Koda is medium in stature – he is about 45 pounds and sits low to the ground like a basset does, because of his low center of gravity, he is very strong. He doesn’t tend to pull on the leash much because he likes to take his time and use his hound nose to sniff every single thing he can. He loves to go for walks and check out his surroundings – sometimes stopping to just absorb it all. Koda would also be happy to just sit outside in a fenced in yard or on a long lead, enjoying the sunshine!
Even though Koda is 11, he still loves to follow his people around the house and will love you forever if you play fetch with him – especially if you use a squeaky ball! He currently lives in a home with a few stairs and handles them well but, due to his short legs, he may struggle in a home with a lot of stairs to navigate. He can jump into his foster moms van and LOVES car rides, he does lean out of the window fairly far, and if he wasn’t leashed to the seat he could potentially jump or fall so keeping him tethered while riding in the car is going to be a necessity for his new family in order to keep him safe.
Koda is good with children, he tends to gravitate towards kids because they are very interesting to watch and play with! He greets strangers with curiosity, sniffing hands and clothing. He loves to meet new people and seems energized when new bodies are around. He has always been gentle and loving towards every person he has met. Koda is currently living with two cats and respects their space – he tends to get scared of them when they hiss at him and he runs to his foster mom for protection! He is also good with other dogs, he is curious about all of them but isn’t pushy about it.
Koda is house trained and can hold it for the entire work day and overnight as well. He rarely has accidents in the house and if he does, it is usually because he is left for an abnormal amount of time. He has not been crated while in rescue but has been fine when allowed to roam the house – after the house is dog proofed, of course. He is a hound and will follow his nose to any type of food or trash that he can find that is within reach. Koda is VERY treat motivated – he will do just about anything for a treat! He gets a treat daily when his foster mom leaves for work to distract him from the fact that he will be alone for up to 10 hours. Occasionally Koda will get into the cat food and because it is so delicious he doesn’t like to have it taken away. However, it makes him extremely gassy so his foster mom just distracts him from the cat food with a treat and then takes the cat food away – this makes it a good experience for everyone! Due to Koda’s food motivation, he is confined while people are eating because he wants to help you finish their food, he just can’t control himself! ï
Koda is a very loving boy that is great with everyone and everything! He always has a smile on his face and is eager to please, especially if a treat is involved. Even though he is 11, he still has a youthful spirit and seems to appreciate the small things in life!
