My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This precious Pekingese is a backyard breeder pooch who was discarded together with Tess (see her bio under "Pekes for Adoption") and some other dogs, when the breeder no longer had any use for them.

Everyone who has met Scotty, from vet hospital staff to PVPC volunteers, hails this boy as being one of the sweetest dogs you will ever meet.

He has a diluted color gene which gives him his unusual appearance and causes him to be very sensitive to light. Currently, he is getting eye drops as well as thyroid medicine which he will need for the rest of his life. But that is such a small price to pay for all the love, fun, and companionship that you get in return.

This is what his foster mom had to say about Scotty: “I wish you could see Scotty. He is so wonderful and has made himself right at home. This dog is one of the sweetest, most loving and playful guys you could ever want. Just today the dogs and I were out in the backyard playing and Scotty had a squeaky toy that he was running around with and tossing over his shoulder and chasing. He doesn't have a care in the world and he seems very happy. He's very smart and catches on to things quickly. He is good with going up stairs, but still reluctant to walk down them. Scotty also is doing better with his potty training. He can go through the night without wetting in the belly band (I only use it when I can't keep a good eye on him), and I am very actively working with him on teaching proper bathroom manners. Compared to when he first got here, the difference is vast and he continues to make progress. Scotty is going to make a family very happy.”

Scotty is up to date on his vaccines, has been neutered, and had a hernia repaired. He weighs 16 pounds and is approximately 8-9 years old. Update 3-10-09 from his foster mom: "Things are great. Scotty is like a member of the family now; he's so at home here. He runs around and plays with his toys and he loves to play outside as well. He and Brody (his foster brother) get along really well and the two of them have even started playing together. I guess Brody just needed to get used to someone new being in the house all the time. :-) But I'm so excited about the progress he's making! :-) So far he hasn't had an accident at all today. I think whomever adopts Scotty is just going to have to be very consistent with taking him outside often and learning what his body language is telling them."

Update 4-20-09 from his foster mom: "Hi all! So sorry it's taken me so long to give an update, but I suppose the old saying holds true that no news is good news. :-) Scotty is still doing wonderful. I took him to my vet and he said that Scotty's thyroid levels are good and to keep giving him the amount of medication that he is currently on. I am taking Scotty to a local eye specialist tomorrow morning; Scotty can go through the night without the diaper. He's going up and down stairs all by himself now. :-) He's such a sweetheart."

Update 4-21-09 from his foster mom: "I took Scotty to the eye doctor today and it was fairly good news. She wants me to begin taking Scotty off of his eye drop medication and see how he does without them. She would like me to back the treatments off to once a day instead of twice and gradually remove them completely, providing no issues rear their head again. Just in case, I may discover that Scotty still needs the eye drops, she gave me a refill prescription. We'll see how it goes. :-) She said his tear production was normal, so that's good; however, she mentioned that he has cataracts starting and she said she can't really predict what will happen with them. I asked if she thought he would eventually go completely blind, but she was unable to offer a definite answer. He will need to go have his tear production checked in about a month, and have another follow up with the specialist."

We adopt in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia and require home and vet checks. Scotty’s adoption fee is $250.00.
