My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

YOU MUST HAVE AN APPROVED APPLICATION IN ORDER TO SET UP A TIME TO MEET OUR PETS.

Chester is a gorgeous 2 year old who seems to be a Collie mix with beautiful fluffy fur and a streamlined, elegant figure. He is missing some fur since he had fleas when found, but this should grow back now that he is flea free.

He was found as a stray by a kind family who kept him for eight days before bringing him to us. At first, he was shy and scared but he hung around outside all day and slept on their porch, not wanting to leave. Apparently, he was not fond of life as a stray!

This family had 6 children and Chester loved all of them. However, he may not be good or totally trustworthy around really small children so his new home should only have older (10 or older) dog savvy kids if any.

He got along great with their cat.

He was allowed to come inside with the kids and the mom said he consistently scratched at the door to let them know he needed to go outside to potty. They said he seemed to be housetrained.

Chester does know the commands sit and lay down and he is good in the car. The family who found him felt that he must have lived a good life as an indoor dog before becoming a stray.

What we have found here is that Chester is much more comfortable in large areas; free roaming in a home or being outside. He really loves to be outside.

When in a kennel run in an unfamiliar setting, he can be scared and uncertain. He may growl his uncertainty when he feels backed into a corner by a new person at the end of the run (not aggressive, just expressing that he is scared).

He also can be uncomfortable with us putting the noose leash on him to bring him out of the run. In a confined new setting such as a small room, he acts nervous like he just wants to get outside or go to a larger space.

However, as soon as Chester is taken outside, he becomes a much more confident fellow. When in a spacious setting and with people he has bonded with, he is a wonderful dog, sweet, happy and affectionate. He does bond quickly but does need a little time with complete strangers since he can be a little shy and uncertain at first.

We are thinking that all he needs is a little more socialization and the freedom and confidence that comes from living in a loving home.

Chester does bond quickly! On day one he may not be sure if he can trust, but by day 2 he wants to be with you and is such a charming pup. However, since he is a bit insecure, new people should definitely not force their affection onto him or make him feel cornered. All he needs is a little time and patience.

He probably grew up having a fenced yard since he does not seem to be used to the leash. He is fine wearing a collar and leash, just has not learned leash manners or confidence yet. But, he is a very smart, trainable dog and should do great with a few lessons and some more experience.

We have not really tested him with other dogs yet and the family who found him did not have a resident dog. We did let him sniff a calm senior rescue dog here and he seemed pleasantly interested and mannerly.

We would like Chester’s new home to be with an experienced, active family with a large fenced yard. This elegant pup has a beautiful athletic built and is meant to have the freedom to run!
