Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Man this dog is awesome!!! Hoagie is a teddy bear and a top pick by volunteers and shelter staff alike. He's a big lug who just loves to cuddle with people. Hoagie isn't particularly tall or long, but he's just a "beefy" sort of dog. When you meet him, you'll see why he provokes a lot of nicknames starting with the word Meat. To match his look, he also has a low-key personality. When he knows he's going to come outside, he starts getting all worked up and outside he will jump. However, his jumping subsides pretty quickly - unique for a dog his age (~1 year-old). He also responds well to correction. And while he's quite easy to push off, he'll definitely knock a little one over. Hoagie is well behaved otherwise doesn't put up much of a fight when you tell him to sit. He takes treats very gently, though we're still working on getting him not to take your whole hand in his mouth. :) He loves food and seems to be a bottomless pit, so training should be a breeze. He's also a dog who will probably work for affection. When you go up to his cage, he jumps up and will lick your hand like crazy. Outside, if you get down on one knee, he'll put his head on your leg and let you hug and pet him. He'll also try to climb you so he can kiss you. If you turn your face away from him, he just licks your hair or hand or neck instead. He really is the best. Hoagie hasn't shown any signs of aggression towards any person, dog, or thing. We did a food test with him to see how he would react if we took it away while he was eating. He really couldn't care less and would sit to earn the bowl back. We could also pet him when he was eating and he didn't bat an eye. Hoagie has let us look in his mouth, look in his ears, pull his tail and hug him tight. He really is a teddy bear. He's also good with dogs. He got to play with a smaller female pit mix belonging to a volunteer. Her dog is scared of all but the smallest of dogs, and her cold shoulder didn't faze him. He definitely wanted to play and kept trying to antagonize her by jumping on or batting her with his paw. While his attempts only elicited some growling, we think he'd be great with another dog that can match his stature and personality. We would LOVE for Hoagie to get a home ASAP. He was confiscated on 3/16 when he was seen, tied up to a stump in a small yard, by an Animal Control Officer. He didn't have any shelter and only a very short chain allowing little movement. His owners quickly signed him over to Animal Control when faced with a neglect charge. He's now been here for a month, which is way too long for a dog his sized to be in a narrow kennel. He's a happy dog and has already split open the end of his tail from wagging so much in his cage. He's also getting anxious and more desperate to get out of his cage. We know that as soon as you meet him, he'll have found his family. Hoagie is smart and a bit of bulldozer, so we think he'll need a fence with good structural integrity. :) His energy level won't make him the best jogging partner, but he'll probably like to run around and chase balls at his new home. Please come down to meet Hoagie - we promise you won't regret it! __ PLEASE REFER TO LOG # 168 WHEN CALLING THE SHELTER ABOUT THIS DOG.
