Here's what the humans have to say about me:
CARL is a 3-year-old neutered male black lab. Carl weighs 50 pounds and is up to date on shots. This dog is approved for homes with children ages 10 and up.
DESCRIPTION Carl was seized by Animal Control in a cruelty case. He was severely emaciated and required special care and feeding. Carl is doing much better now and has gained much needed weight but still needs to gain a few pounds. Carl is a sweet dog and is good with other dogs. Cats are unknown. From the transporter: Carl was super friendly. He was nervous when he got out of the van. But once I lifted him into my van and gave him a bowl of water, he pretty much instantly transformed into tail wagging-bounciness.
Update: Carl is back to his happy, healthy self. This boy is housebroken, crate trained (although he prefers less than the 10 hour work days he was crated) and good on a leash, although he may bark at other dogs during his walks. He is just a little cuddlebug! He knows (and listens to): sit, come, wait, lay down, paw and other paw- treats help, but Carl really wants to please. He loves retrieving his ball and squeaker toys, and even leaves the squeaker in them. After a little vacay with one of our trainers, Carl is ready for a home of his own. He has been working on his manners and learning a bit of self discipline, but he has learned to focus when corrected. Overall he is an affectionate fellow who loves being outside, playing, and appears to be very willing to please once he understands what is expected of him. Carl prefers that his people be home more than they are gone. He whines and barks but is not destructive and does not use the bathroom inside. There is no evidence of separation anxiety. Carl is not going to be a 'dog park' dog as he does not necessarily appreciate interaction with other dogs. He is not reactive, but he hides or leaves the area. He avoided the trainer's dog so they never had any close up personal contact, so there is no history. Carl is a bit shy and nervous when meeting new people or when anything changes in his environment and it takes a while for him to feel comfortable. He would not interact with either of the trainer's sons and hid from them, so he may have an unpleasant history with men.
Update: Carl is a sweet boy with adorable "puppy" eyes. He's enjoying playing outside and romping around the yard. All this rain hasn't dampened his spirit! He loves to play with toys and especially things that squeak! He knows lots of commands and is ready to show you his tricks! Carl and I played fetch. That is the first time he has relaxed enough outside to really enjoy himself. He had a blast. He is such a sweet boy. He was initially a bit grabby about wanting the stick but I asked him to sit and he did while I threw it and he ran like crazy to get it. He hesitates to give it back but we will work on that now that he is participating. Carl is a shy little guy who loves his people. He doesn't know how to play with other dogs, so they sometimes scare him. He does well with the mellow ones. This petite boy is looking for a calm family without too many people coming and going. He loves to play with squeaky toys and follow his humans around.
Update: Carl arrived at his foster home and after a short adjustment period, seems to be enjoying the new digs! Though initially unsure in the new environment, after a couple of days he is now napping on the dog beds and starting to relax. He does well in the crate, and is a pretty chill guy. Carl is learning about noises outside and foster mom is helping him understand that the airplanes overhead aren't anything to worry about. Though when he initially goes outside he'd prefer to just head back inside where he knows it's safe, once he gets going, he seems to settle in and even enjoyed a nice long walk on the waterfront last night. This sweet boy would probably enjoy country life and long quiet walks without the hubbub of the city. Carl has come a long way on his journey to happiness at LRCP! He's so excited and grateful that his kisses are in abundance! He tries hard to please but knows he's not quite perfect with his walking commands outside in the big world. He's bright and well behaved with other people and dogs and he loves food, We know he'll continue to thrive with that special 'furever' person who will reinforce a trusting, nurturing environment. Those gorgeous eyes are calling out for someone to love this wonderful 3 year old pup. Carl loves to meet people and other dogs. He absolutely loves his squeakies and playing ball. He is well behaved inside (house broken!) and coming a long way with adjusting to all the noises in the big city. He would love to find a forever home in a suburban or rural area. He is finding his fun, and his playful side!
