My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Scooby is a handsome and healthy 2-year-old Harlequin male. He really is a head turner! He is a gentle boy and a velcro dane wanting to constantly be by our side. He suffers from separation anxiety. He enjoys playing tug-of war, fetch and chewing on bones. He is living with another dog in his foster family and they are getting along well. His tail wags every time he sees another dog. His favorite place to be is outside. He loves to run around in the backyard and gets very excited for walks. He is not a big puller but was probably not leash trained as he weaves all over and does not realize he needs to pay attention to where his walker is going. He does not seem to have a high prey drive as he has not gone after any of the wild life that he sees on his walks.
He is still settling into his foster home. He does not bark very much, but due to his anxiety does whine to tell his people when he is feeling anxious. His foster family redirects his attention to a toy to try to redirect his energy. He knows sit, will come when he is called, is working on stay and is working on getting comfortable in his crate. He has only been left alone in his crate for short periods of time (10-15 minutes), but his foster family is working on increasing this.
Scooby takes longer to warm up to men, but his foster dad works from home and Scooby quickly decided that his foster dad is his favorite person. His foster family is also introducing him to new people to try get him more comfortable around strangers. He is fine when new women are introduced but does not seem to warm up to other men when his foster parents are around.
Scooby will do best in a home with someone that is home most of the day, another confident dog, and a large yard where he can play outside.

Update 8-18-18
Scooby is getting more comfortable and gaining confidence with each passing day. We have left him at home (with our other dog) for several hours on a number of occasions without incident. We have stopped crate training for the moment, because he continues to try to “break out” and we don’t want him to hurt himself. He has less anxiety when left with free home of the house with another dog.
Taking him for several walks each day around the neighborhood has definitely improved his leash skills. It is noticeable that he is more comfortable around the neighborhood and less skittish. Scooby definitely gets excited seeing other dogs, and will still pull some on the leash. We are still working on that.
He continues to do great with our Shepard and we’ve had a Cockapoo stay with us for several days without incident. The more we get to know Scooby the more we are convinced that he needs to have another dog (or dogs) in the house for companionship. It’s definitely helping improve his separation anxiety. He still follows his foster dad around the house sometimes, but definitely no longer “joined at the hip”.
As he has gained confidence, his inner puppy is coming out. He loves to dump all of his toys out of the toy box and play with every single one. A few of his favorites are chewing on bones, playing tug of war and getting the squeaker out of a stuffed toy. He often engages our other dog in play.
We are exposing him to more of our family and friends. We have seen definite improvements there, as he is warming up much quicker to women. Still taking longer to warm up to males, but making progress here as well. He is so sweet and playful and has a heart as big as a whale. He’s a pup that just wants you to be his friend. An amazing dog.

Update 9/13/18
Scooby is continuing to build his confidence. His foster parents were out of town for 5 days and had two dog sitters come to stay during that time. He quickly warmed up to both of them and was snuggling on the couch by the end by the end of the first day. He also did well being left alone in the house for a longer period of time, up to 4 hours. He was a sweet, lovable boy for the dog sitters. They were amazed at how quickly he warmed up and how good he was all weekend. He loves his evening walks and has to stop and inspect every acorn in case it turns out to be a toad, his newest obsession.
His new trick is picking up his toy box and dumping everything out so he can play with all of his toys at once, he’s like a little kid with a bucket of blocks. Scooby has a big heart with lots of love and entertainment to give.
