COMET & VELVET'S STORY

20 adult cats and two litters of kittens were abandoned on a very busy road in north Nanaimo, when their irresponsible owner moved away. Discarded along with bags of garbage, they had no food, no water, and no shelter. They were left to fend for themselves or die.

Eventually a passerby noticed the gathering of cats in the driveway of a now empty house. She made inquiries. No one knew how to find the cruel owner.

So the ‘Guardian Angel, Lori’ took it upon herself to bring food and water every day for these precious creatures. She called the local animal welfare organization many times. It was several weeks before they finally responded by trapping 14 adults but left the rest. Apparently they were short of resources and more urgent rescues needed attention. Lori continued caring for the cats and kittens providing them with fresh water and food twice daily. Soon the cold weather was upon them and more kittens were born. Some would likely die over the winter and Lori became more desperate to save as many as possible. It was a heart-wrenching ordeal.

Several months later, Lori became aware of CatNAP, a registered non-profit, volunteer, cat rescue group. Lori worked with CatNAP to trap the surviving 7 adult cats and 16 kittens. They were all given medical treatment, vaccinated, spayed/neutered and tattooed. Foster homes provided tender care until permanent homes could be found. The cost of pain and stress and loss of life of these innocent animals cannot be measured. A commitment by Lori over ten months, plus hundreds of other volunteer hours and donated dollars were required to resolve the cruelty of this owner’s negligence.

Now, we need your help! Longing for permanent homes to share their love and mischief with, we have Comet & Velvet and four other kitties:

COMET & VELVET
So like their mother (Shadow), Comet and Velvet are 7-months old females, pewter-blue in colour, with dense, irresistible coats. They frolic, find mischief where you wouldn’t expect, love a heat register and shamelessly grovel for treats. Like their two siblings, they have been fostered together, are bonded and must be adopted as a pair (twice as much love!).

Their fellow refugees are:

SHADOW
Like Tabatha, Shadow is a survivor as only mothers would know. She was the first adult to be rescued by CatNAP and the vet immediately discovered she was lactating. Typically CatNAP allows at least four days in a recovery foster home for female cats to allow healing and to ward off infections. With hungry, anxious kittens awaiting her, we had no alternative but to return her to her litter and hope for the best. And the best we got! Shadow is a beautiful pewter-grey, two-year-old with a dense, healthy coat and tons of affection. Her ‘meow’ is so soft if you don’t listen closely, you will miss it. But her insistence on being petted can’t be missed. Tabatha and Shadow were inseparable. Together, they survived a second brutal winter with Lori’s devotion to feeding them, and encouraging them. Finally, a month apart, they checked out the sardines in the trap and their journey to their permanent home began.

TABATHA
The last cat to be rescued, Tabatha is an exceptional little survivor. Only two months old at abandonment, Tabatha is now a year old. A Tabby/Tortie with some polka dots, big round eyes and an impish face, Tabatha is a soft touch! Somehow she managed to get through that first harsh winter but her siblings perished. Her ears were frozen and are now rounded reminders of tougher times. Tabatha is playful, affectionate and responded to Lori’s calls for her to come for her food every day. And, she had Shadow at her side to give her companionship and guidance. Tabatha was the only remaining cat and the last one to be rescued.

NOTTE' & EBONY
But what about Shadow’s kittens? Yes, we rescued all four of them and they are available to complete the home fireplace setting. Two of her kittens are now 7-month-old black beauties, with stunning sphinx-like faces, slender females, full of fun with meows to make up for their quiet mother. They have been fostered together and are bonded. Their permanent home will want to keep them that way.
