My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

05/09/09: “OH SAY CAN YOU SEE ME?” Says Beamer

The latest foster home update:

“Beamer is doing very well. His eye has healed beautifully. He is a smart boy and has learned sit, leave it, drop, stay ( as long as you stay with him but we are working on it). Beamer needs a little work on leash-walking but does well once you get going.

He loves his rubber bone and his rubber kong and carries them everywhere! He likes to play with his Frisbee, especially down our long hallway! He also loves the outdoors and likes to run. He is very loving and just wants your attention, like all boxers.

Beamer is becoming more adjusted to his new life and every day is better. He always shows us what a great boy he is!And he truly is. You would hit the jackpot if you adopted this boy!”

04/09/09: READY AND WAITING
Beamer had his follow-up appointment with the vet to take out his staples and he had a good check-up. He has healed remarkably well and is ready to be adopted. Below is an update from Beamer’s foster mom:

“Beamer has been doing great. He sleeps all through the night and snores like crazy! He likes his chew toys but prefers the ones that are hard.

When he is outside he loves to run fast so placing him in a home with a fenced yard is essential! Beamer loves people and loves to lean on you! He would rather be on the couch or right next to you more than anything else.

Beamer and his foster brother are still working out their little issues but things are getting better every day. Like most boxers, he is very sweet and for the most part very quiet. He has only barked once since he has been here.

Beamer definitely needs some practice with a few things such as bringing toys back (no retriever in this boy) and racing through the door (however, greyhound might be in his genes) but we are working on these things!

Beamer is eating well and has gained some weight. Initially he weighed in at 52 lbs and since then he has gained approximately four pounds. He needs a few more pounds on him but that won't be a problem since he loves his food!

I have attached a few newer pics so you can see how cute he is.”

3/25/09: ON THE PATH OF RECOVERY

Beamer had his surgery to remove his right eye last week and there were no complications. The Ophthalmologist’s post-op report confirmed the eye was blind and the cornea was severely scarred. The retina was detached and the lens was completely resorbed. The doctor said these findings suggest a previous trauma that was never treated.

Beamer’s eye appeared enlarged, indicating that the pressure had increased in the past (it was normal when examined). Following the removal of his eye, a prosthesis was implanted in the orbit, and his eyelid was stapled shut.

The first week after surgery is a critical time and to minimize the risk of post operative complications Beamer needs to be kept quiet. Due to the nature of the surgery he needs to eat soft food for the first few days. His incision will need to be kept clean and free of discharge and a warm compress applied twice a day until the swelling subsides.

The doctor prescribed pain medication to keep Beamer comfortable and antibiotics to ward off infection. His staples are scheduled to be removed in 10 days. In the meantime, he is getting lots of tender loving care and is very happy.

Here is a brief report from his foster mom:

“Beamer is doing well after his surgery. He is settling in nicely although we have him on a slightly altered routine until his staples are removed and he is finished with his medications. He is a very sweet, bright and charming boy! He loves people and is getting along with his canine foster brother and sister. He knows some commands and once he is 100% we look forward to working with him to discover what else this bright boy knows!”

NEGLECT CAUSES BEAMER TO LOSE HIS EYE

Beamer is a six year old fawn male boxer who was surrendered to an animal control facility by his family because they could not afford the medical treatment for his severe eye condition. Unfortunately for Beamer, this delay in treatment caused irreversible problems.

No one showed an interest to adopt Beamer at the shelter after they found out about his medical issue. The shelter knew that he would not be adopted and decided to contact a vet for help. The vet in turn contacted NBR.

The initial diagnosis was glaucoma, and the doctor also thought Beamer had a tumor behind his eye. When he was seen by an eye specialist it was discovered that the glaucoma was secondary to an untreated blunt trauma to his right eye. Luckily there was no tumor.

The Ophthalmologist determined he was blind in that eye, and said it was in Beamer’s best interest to have it removed. Since his eye has pronounced bulging the doctor said he would risk further damage if he did not have this surgery. We had him neutered and his surgery to remove his eye is scheduled for this week.

Everyone who has met Beamer has remarked what a great dog he is and that he is handsome to boot. How sad it is that Beamer must lose his eye because his injury was left untreated. Again we need your help. The estimated cost for his medical bills is $1500.
