Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Capone is an approx 2 yr. old male Merlequin with gorgeous blue eyes who was turned into the shelter because he was no longer wanted by his owners. Capone is rough around the edges and needs to work on manners but does know sit and shake. He is also working on leash manners and has come great strides in just a few days. He is a quick learner and highly food motivated! We think he might have some slight hearing impairment but it doesn't stop him one bit.
Capone LOVES his foster dad and just wants to be with PEOPLE every second! He does suffer from some separation anxiety and will need an active canine playmate to keep him company. Capone cannot be crated as he is the great Hoodini and will actually hurt himself to get out of a wire crate. He also plays VERY rough with his people with jumping up on you and puppy biting. We are teaching him this is not appropriate behavior.
He is not 100% housebroken(marking) but we are working on it and hoping that once he is neutered this will go away.
He gets along great with the male and female Dane in the house. He will need an active family that can devote a lot of time to him. Due to his sep. anxiety, he cannot go to a home where the family is gone 8+ hrs. Capone would probably do great as an agility dog as he enjoys having something to do like leaping in the air like Michael Jordan.
He will be required to go to a house with a yard( to burn off some energy) and a 6ft fence. Due to his puppy like behavior he will only be placed in a home with children 10+ and will be required to attend obedience training. Capone met his first cats today and he was a little too interested in them and therefore will not be placed with cats.
Capone LOVES trash so make sure to keep the cans locked, not just closed cause he knows how to open them.
Capone also likes to go and get his collar and leash so you can take him for a walk..Its too funny. Capone came to MAGDRL in March of 2009.
Despite his lack of manners, he is a true delight and is happy to please his foster parents.
Capone will be ready for adoption March 21 st.
Update 4/2/09 - Capone is now in a new foster home and has been on a strict nothing in life is free plan and he has changed a lot. He now will go away or leave a room when told to. I am using more hand signals with him and he is catching on fast. I would say he does not have separation anxiety. He has more rules and structure in his life than before. I believe he felt he could do whatever he wanted and got very frustrated if his people left. Now that he has boundaries and rules, he is much calmer and just needed someone to be his leader. We have left him alone for several hours and he has done nothing. We have a dog walker that comes and along with having doggie brother and sisters, he has really calmed down. He will go upstairs by himself and lay down on our bed or on the floor without having to spend every second with us. That's great! He is walking better as long as he is on a harness. He still plays ruff, but that’s because he is still very much a puppy. Capone has some issues with high valued items (food) that he steals off of the counters. We are working on that. But I can take his food away and raw hides with no problem. We still have a lot of work but he is coming along nicely.
Update 4/30/09 - Capone is getting better with his manners but still jumps up and knocks me down every chance he gets and when he gets excited (which is like every other hour). He is paying attention much better and will calm down faster now, but he still plays ruff. We feel Capone is NOT for the first time Dane owner and should not go to a home with kids younger than 15.
