Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Hi, I'm Mama. I'm a beautiful 7 year old Husky mix looking for the most perfect forever home. I hear my story is pretty incredible, so if you haven't heard it, here's the shortened version...
My rescue ladies spent 7 years trying to trap and rescue me and in December 2017, they finally did it!!! They had been saving my beautiful puppies for years, but no matter how hard they tried, I never, never, never let them get me!
What happened was, I got very sick after some major complications while trying to give birth to a new litter of puppies. I was weak, a mess, and in need of some major medical assistance. I was finally caught and they rushed me right to the vet for an emergency spay. Up until that point, I had never been indoors and NEVER been touched by a human; that's right- I went 7 years without ever being petted.
Luckily, I got the best care and started feeling better quickly. Also, all my bloodwork came back perfect and my fecal and heartworm tests were negative. It was official, I was medically PERFECT and ready to go to my foster home to work on socialization and becoming a 'dog'.
I've been in my foster home for a few months now and I'm being a very good girl. Initially, I slept a LOT, but after 7 years of sleeping with one eye open I had a lot of catching up to do. It definitely helped having dog beds to sleep on- they're simply amazing and SOOOO much better than the dirt ground. When I wasn't sleeping, I was mostly laying on a dog bed taking in all the sights, smells, sounds, and activity of a home.
I've made 5 dog friends here in my foster home and any time we go out, I don't react to any of the dogs or cats I meet. It took me a couple months, but now I even play with the other dogs in the house. We have a great time running and wrestling!
Initially, I threw lots of tantrums on my leash because I've always hated those things, but I'm in a much better routine now. I walk beautifully on a loose leash, I have regular meal times where I eat out with my pack, I trot on a treadmill, I ride well in a car, and aI love my crate as long as one of my favorite beds is in the crate.
Of everything, this human contact stuff continues to be the most interesting. The first day, my skin would crawl when my foster mom pet me, I didn't want to make any eye contact and would often just face the wall in the hopes that she'd leave me alone. Well she didn't leave me alone- she's good about giving me down time, but if she wouldn't have pushed me little by little I would have stayed in my shell forever and that wasn't an option any more. I'm happy to announce that although I'm still working at trusting people, it's not all bad. I'm relaxing and even learning to enjoy some touch- ear scratches and belly rubs are my favorite!
After 7 years on my own, everyone says this is pretty great progress which is why I'm now in search of the most perfect forever home! I could list some of the things that I'd love in a forever home, but I guess I'm not so much looking for just an adopter, but rather a pack leader that will guide me and help me as I continue to become a 'dog'. I'm an amazing girl- I'm smart, gorgeous, and loving in my own way. I cannot wait to meet whoever is lucky enough to become my forever family.
Mama is spayed, microchipped, and up to date on all vaccines. She is house-trained, dog-door trained, and crate trained. Her adoption fee is $250. For the chance to adopt Mama, please complete an application at happytailsaz.org.
