Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Those of you who regularly follow the MWCR website know that Leo has been with us longer than many of our dogs, and you may have wondered why such a handsome boy wasn’t snapped up immediately. The reason is simple: Leo had some behavioral issues that made him a less than perfect match for the many people who were interested in him. His foster mom was committed to finding Leo the perfect home and to helping him become the perfect companion. He has gone through six months of “puppy boot camp” in which he attended classes at the local kennel club and worked with his foster mom to refine his behavior. He is now ready for his forever home.
When Leo first came to MWCR he was filled with an exuberant energy that often was channeled into excessive behaviors. Leo was almost obsessively interested in other dogs. It was easy to interpret his interest as aggression, but in fact he was just overly dog-reactive. His foster mom repeatedly brought him to obedience classes with the sole purpose of exposing him to many other dogs and teaching him a more restrained reaction to them. Today he has become the “Wal-Mart greeter” of the dog world. He loves meeting other dogs of every size and shape, and he has made friends with dogs as small as a Chihuahua and as large as a Great Dane. He adores the other dogs at his foster home and respectfully gauges the exact level of play appropriate to each of them. He is always willing to share toys or chew bones with any of them and willingly allows his foster mom to handle his food bowl, even when he is eating from it.
Leo is fully housebroken and crate trained, though he does prefer a wire kennel to the enclosed variety. When it is time for him to enter his kennel, he nudges the door open, walks in and quickly spins around to receive his “good boy” treat and chew bone. He never begs for food at the table and has overcome his previous inclination to “counter surf,” though he has the occasional relapse if something particularly tasty is left too close to the edge. He sleeps in his kennel at night, though he could also be allowed free reign, since he is not destructive.
Leo loves children and particularly relishes playing interactive games with them such as Frisbee, catch and tug. He is still an active dog and quite puppyish in his behavior, so he will need to be with children who are old enough to not be frightened by his boisterous play and to treat him with respect and kindness. Although he thoroughly enjoys his playtime, he is always ready to flop down next to his family for some serious cuddle time too. He is a lover whose trademark is to give the gentlest of kisses to his foster mom’s eyelids.
Leo has made huge strides in dealing with his reactions to overly stimulating situations. However, all training is a process and he is looking for a forever family that will continue to guide him. Anything with wheels is a red flag to Leo, so he will need ongoing training and supervision around cars, bicycles, lawnmowers, etc. He needs to ride in a crate when being transported and is less stimulated by other cars if his crate is partially covered.
In the months that Leo has been with MWCR he has made the transition from “diamond in the rough” to sparkling gemstone. The best home for this little sparkler must have a fenced yard where he can play and burn off energy and should include another friendly, active canine companion. His forever family should also be an active one that wants to include Leo in their activities and is ready to continue his training. Leo’s adoring public has been eagerly awaiting him and he is now ready for them. This is one special Collie.
