Noel is a goofy, beautiful, carefree, energetic and very loving girl who just wants to have fun. She loves playing with the other dogs, going on walks, or just generally doing whatever her foster family is doing. She's going to make someone a fantastic buddy and companion.
BACKSTORY
Noel came to MOGS after she was seized by animal control for cruelty. She was starved, dehydrated and left outside with no shelter. She is currently is a foster home.
TEMPERAMENT / BEHAVIOR
Noel is amazing. She was seized for extreme cruelty but despite her suffering she still loves people. She's a sweet little girl who is very soft, friendly and goofy. She wants to greet everyone and will be very vocal about it. She loves being in the same room with her humans and will follow everywhere. She acts as a tripping hazard since she picks the least out of the way spot to lay down, especially in the kitchen. She does tend to sniff the counter and floor for yummies but has never jumped up to grab anything. Will try her best to reach into a high chair to get leftovers but will leave it if told to. Her foster family doesn't leave things towards the edge of counters so she is not given the opportunity to steal anything. She does like to chew on stuffed animals and does not know the difference between her toys and baby's toys so her foster family does their best to just keep non-dog toys off the floor. Like most GSDs Noel is a super shedder, her fur is very thick.
TRAINING
She's learning basic manners and doing very well. She is food driven which will help with her training. The first new behavior she had to practice was waiting at baby gates or backyard fences. She has climbed a fence to follow her person on the other side. With a 6 ft fence she will be fine, with a somewhat lower fence, she will need complete supervision in the backyard to avoid escaping. She sometimes jumps baby gates to be closer to her people. She is pretty good at listening and has learned the sit command. She is house broken and crate trained. She does okay on a leash and is currently walked with a combo of the martingale collar and a gentle leader for better control. She can get a bit wild and unruly when other dogs are near since she wants to go say hi and play. Her future family will need to spend the time to exercise her and stimulate her, and finish her training using good canine leadership skills.
OTHER ANIMALS
Noel gets along with most dogs; she just wants to play. Sometimes she plays too rough for other dogs because she is so excited. She does not seem to understand her size and she is very fast moving. Currently lives with her foster siblings, a 25lb dog and a 12lb chiweenie. Noel does seem to respect the smaller dog's space. Noel would do best with a same size and energy level doggie buddy to play and romp with. She's still got a lot of puppy in her and occasionally doesn’t notice when other dogs tell her they're tired, so you may have to remind her that play time is over. She takes correction easily and is perfectly willing to go inside and let the other dogs rest. Noel has a mild-to-moderate small prey drive and cannot be in a home with cats.
PEOPLE
Noel does well with adults and is very good with kids. She has been very patient with the human toddler in her foster home. When the young one gets a little crazy, she for the most part handles it very well. She has learned the command 'escape' or move away from toddler reach. When she has reached her limit, she will let him know with a nudge or growl but has never shown aggression. Noel is a large, strong and energetic dog who has the potential to be too rough in play and knock a child over, or collide with a child. As with all large dogs, she must be supervised around small children just to be sure things don't get too rough.
MEDICAL
Up-to-date on all vaccines, has a current rabies tag, is spayed and has been microchipped. She was originally heartworm positive but has been treated and is heartworm free.
Noel has a toenail that grows up and over but doesn't appear to cause her any discomfort other than when she has her nails trimmed.
At some point prior to coming to MOGS, Noel suffered from a LEFT hind leg femur fracture that did not receive any treatment, so healed slightly misaligned. Because of this, she does sometimes experience discomfort in that leg and requires intermittent pain management with an anti-inflammatory pain reliever. She also receives joint supplement support on a daily basis. Noel's injured leg has been assessed by her regular vet, as well as orthopedic experts at Blue Pearl, and both experts agree this will be a chronic monitoring situation which will need intermittent pain management for life. Even though Noel has medium to high energy, this leg can sometimes significantly limit her activity due to discomfort. At those times, she will do best with short walks around the neighborhood, just not too far as she cannot handle it.
Noel has no other known medical issues.
